Only 4 days post op and STARVING!

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on Friday (12/2). I am not able to get down my 80oz of fluids per day (including 3 Protein Drinks for 75g of protein), and I am starving. I was never hungry even once during the 2 week liquid diet pre-surgery. I can't wait until this first week is over so I can try pureed food. Is this normal? I know it's stupid, but I feel like the surgery must not have worked.

Many people feel similar to how you're feeling, so yes, it is very normal... Including the doubts whether the surgery worked or not. For what I've read and what I've personally experienced, a healing stomach (a swollen stomach), excess acid mimics hunger. I was never told this... And from day 2, I was confused like you were. I didn't know until I did research. My best advice is this: Make sure you take your antacid as directed, make sure you work hard to get your Water and Protein in as your program directs. My hunger dropped off big time on day 16 or 17, some people takes a little longer and others are even faster. Hang in there. Congrats on your surgery!

Trust me I know exactly how you feel! It's crazy because most of my hunger comes at night. During hours that I def shouldn't be eating! It's the worst

Take a deep breath. You really need to work at getting fluids in and then your Protein. If you can't meet those goals, moving to purees won't help. Your stomach is very swollen so try to work with it and not against it. The hunger may be driven by excess acid and you can address this with your surgeon. The surgery will work as long as you do your part.

Not at all! I try to eat sugar free applesauce. I'm thinking it's because my monthly is like right around he corner, because even after that I'm still starving. Not going to lie though....I did sneak a couple veggie straws one night just because they melt in your mouth. It did help but not trying to make that a habit.

Sometimes hunger is mistaken with acid. That happened to me. Once the acid hit it was bad, I had to switch acid reducers and drink maalox. After the acid was gone my hunger was gone. Check with your surgeon or team.

I've been getting in more than the 80 oz. Fluid since post op day 3 and I've been getting 75g Protein too, so I have been doing exactly what I am supposed to do. When I'm hungry, I just drink more Water and deal with it. Just curious if it was normal or not. I made a typo in my original post. I meant to say "I AM able to get down my 80oz of fluids per day (including 3 Protein drinks for 75g of protein)."

I remember a couple times first week thinking I felt hungry, but it's not real hunger, it's just a trick played on your nerves because your stomach is healing. Once you try a couple bites of yogurt or pudding, you'll quickly realize that feeling is not true hunger, and also it went away by week 2 for me.

mentally, you're also not used to the new stomach and still thinking about food the way you did with your stomach pre-op.

Just drink liquids and eat sugar free popsickls. The sugar free popsickles and sugar free Jello would also fill me up when i got that gnawing feelling

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
