Kaiser California covers weight loss surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am a newbie to this group. I am just starting to research about the surgery and its pros and cons. I am in California and have an insurence through kaiser and was wondering if any one here had weight loss surgery at kaiser and would love to know more info from them.

Thanks in advance.

Yes I had surgery. It's called the options program. I only paid $100 but some insurances are different

Yes; my doc has the contract to do the DS for norcal Kaiser since they don't do it in house. We usually have a few Kaiser people in the monthly support group.

Yes Kaiser covers it ...you just pay your hospital stay deductible . You will need to go through a 12-week options program. meets once a week for about a little less than 2 hours. You learn a lot at these classes so don't think of it as a bothersome. I did my classes through the Fontana location and had my surgery in Redlands. Good luck to you!

It depends on your insurance coverage.

I'm having surgery through Kaiser in Richmond, CA on Nov. 30. For us the options program was only 4 weeks, and I don't know if everyone has to do it. I started the process by talking to my Primary Care Physician and he referred me to the Bariatrics department.

Good luck.

I have Kaiser as well and my primary doctor is the one who recommended the surgery. I have had absolutely no out-of-pocket share of cost, the only thing I'm paying for is $5 copay for any medications that I might need. Some plans might be different though

Hi @@SweetyShetty1988! Depending on where you live the program is different. In SoCal there is a 12 week Options program and it is required. In NorCal, not everyone is required to go and the classes are 4 weeks long I believe. I wasn't required to go so maybe someone else can chime in. From orientation to surgery its about 2-3 months for NorCal if you meet goal weight quickly. Where do you live?

Kaiser offers WLS to people who are paying premiums for plans that cover it.

However not all plans do. It depends on what plan your employer selected. If your current plan doesn't cover WLS you can discuss it with your employer and if they are willing to pay the cost he/she can select a plan that does.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
