Loosing super slow

Recommended Posts

Yes, it's normal. Your body loses in fits and starts. Often, when you aren't losing a lot of weight, it's because your body is redistributing the fat, and you're loading inches. Measure yourself. As long as you are following the program exactly, it will come off.

I was a super slow loser as well. It took me six months to lose 30lbs. Just hang in there, keep working the plan-- high Protein, low carbs, lots of Water, move your butt, make sure you're pooping and keep your eye on Non scale victories-- stuff you won't see on a scale like saggy butt in your jeans, smaller face, rings and watches flinging about, shoes flopping off of your feet.

If you're not tracking your food, you may want to start. Snackies can sneak in without you even knowing it! I always find that I reach for junk when I'm not actively paying attention to what I am eating.

You may need to shake some things up. Raise or lower your carb level (not with junk), take up a new sport, increase your Water intake, rearrange your eating schedule, stop eating earlier in the evening... you have the rest of your life to figure out how this works. it's not a race!

LASTLY-- I was the person that complained and asked about slow losing and was told to 'get off the scale' or 'don't worry about it' or 'stop cheating', so i am never going to be that person. I INVESTIGATED THE ISSUE and found that I have PCOS. if you google gastric sleeve and PCOS you'll find LEGION of women who lose very VERY slowly, even with WLS. And then, once a month, we drop weight. During my weight loss phase I would lose NOTHING for 3-4 weeks. Then the week of my cycle, drop 4lbs. And then NOTHING for 3 weeks, and then drop 5lbs.

This is really interesting about pcos and losing slowly. I have pcos am 5 weeks out and everyone else who had surgery the same day as me has lost almost double the weight I have. I'm also breast feeding a baby so wondering if that's making things worse. I know metformin can help with pcos symptoms and regulate hormones for pcos. Anybody know if you're allowed to take it after sleeve surgery?

My doc never put me on metformin because I wasn't trying to have children. The side effects were...unattractive and I have lost weight (actually still losing, that's how slow I've lost) It's something to explore.. It looks like there is at least one thread about it here at BariatricPal.

I can definitely sympathize with you and know your frustration. I am also a slow loser and I do not have PCOS. I am almost 8 weeks post op sleeve surgery and have only lost 17 lbs. some days it's 16. I don't really know why it's so slow but I continue to do as everyone on this site recommends, and that is to stay on track with my Water and Protein. My limitation at this time is that I cannot exercise. I have a partially torn Achilles' tendon that requires surgery, which I can't have until January. So I am sure that lack of exercise contributes to the slow weight loss. In any case I will continue doing what I can and I offer you encouragement also. I know it is discouraging at times. I am optimistic that we will get there as long as we stay the course.

Anyone who is currently obese and staying on plan is losing FAT no matter what the scale says. I weigh once a week at PT because they insist. Staying off the scale between PT appoint ments keeps me sane.

So happy I found this thread. Don't get me wrong I'm thrilled for all those who post those fabulous loss numbers. But it only adds to my feelings of failure. My surgery was nearly 2 months ago and I'm down only 20lbs. ( including pre op diet loss) I journal every bite and walk 3-5 miles daily. Motivation was tough this morning until I read that I'm not alone. Staying faithful and will seek out more non scale victories. Thanks Gang!

I just went for my 3 month follow up visit. I have had a few stalls from 1 week to 3 weeks but I'm not stressing over it. I was told to keep drinking my Protein shakes during the rapid weight loss period in the beginning to make sure I'm getting enough. I was more concerned that I was still in that part of the process. My doctor told me yes and that I'm on target for my expected weight loss at my 6 month follow up. When you're hungry, eat, something. Don't deprive yourself. That's for diets past. This is the present. I have been obese all my life. I thought I would be freaking out once I lost a significant amount of weight. But I was so busy with the other components of this (prepping my meals, going to the gym, etc) that I didn't have time. I step on the scale every day but for me it's a game. So, the stalls didn't get me down. My body is changing and I'm wearing smaller clothes. No freak out here, just something I deserve for myself. I look at a stall as my body's way of saying it's coming late to the party but it'll be there eventually.

Did you walk 3-5 miles a day before the surgery? If you are walking 3-5 miles a day you are putting on muscle and muscle weights more than fat.

It had been some time since I worked out in any fashion routinely. So I'm hoping that's part of it. More reason to get that Protein and Water in too! I was not good with keeping track of measurements early on, so as the clothes fit better (even slowly) I'm more motivated than ever. TY!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
