Iodine allergy, I need help finding a Protein Shake or Powder

Recommended Posts

Hey there! So I had my surgery September 26th since then I've been having trouble finding a good Protein Shake or powder. I first I tried the Protein Drink ISO PURE and in different flavors but I really didn't like them at all and found it to be a complete struggle to finish it. Then I tried Premier Protein which had very little iodine in it and I was doing good till the iodine started to build up in my system and I had an allergic reaction to it. Since then I've been drinking Pure Protein Natural whey Protein the rich chocolate flavor but it taste horrible and I absolutely dread drinking it everyday. I really need help finding something that has no iodine and that taste decent. HELP! Thanks in advice for your help.

I do drink the ready made Premier Protein drinks in vanilla and chocolate. I find the chocolate to be less sweet, which sometimes is exactly what I want. But I have also recently discovered Click Protein Powder and Fit Protein powder ... they have them in vanilla latte flavor....so YUM. I mix them with my Premier protein drink for added protein in the AM. Plus, it gives me my "coffee" fix. Sometimes, I skip the Premier protein and just add Water. You should try it - they have different flavors too. I buy mine online at www.netrition.com - so far, that site seems to have the best prices and biggest selection of bariatric approved products. Good luck!!

I'm not sure if these Proteins have iodine or not but...I love ATKIN'S. Also, I love GENEPRO unflavored. I add it to my coffee every day. It has 30grams for a Tablespoon. Atkins has 15grams of Protein. I'm with you about the Isopure YUKKY!! I commend anyone that can handle that junk.

Yeh I bought unflavored Isopure at my surgical nurse suggestion and I've only tried it once in Tomato red pepper Soup but it was horrible!!!!!!!!! I so could taste it so called unflavored it was like paste! And it totally took down the sweetness of the Tomato Soup. I couldn't even force myself to finish it.

I really live g6 sports vanilla powder from GNC. It's 25 grams, it's clean and yummy yum plus uses stevia so no artificial sweeteners crap. I have no idea about the iodine. It's a little more expensive then the average powder but GNC gives you a good discount if you have one near by

Experimentation is the key.

It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. I remember in the hospital after surgery I could not drink the Water because it tasted very chlorinated. Eventually I found flavored water such as Crystal Light to work O.K. Many experience problems drinking Protein shakes. I hated them. But in the beginning I drank them, three 16-ounce Protein Shakes a day, in order to meet my Protein requirements. You do not have to like Protein Shakes only tolerate them. There are many varieties of protein shakes available today. Experiment until you can find one you can tolerate. Over time as your meal volume increases, if you concentrate on consuming high protein meals, you can begin to reduce your reliance on protein shakes. I went from 3 a day, down to 2, down to 1 and eventually none when I reached 1 cup per meal at a year and a half post-op.

What worked best for me was using Muscle Milk Light (Vanilla Creme) blended with Water and a half a banana. I used a Ninja single serving blender to get a smooth not lumpy Protein shake.

oh yeh... I also use a stick blender and I put my powder in skim milk and even add Greek non fat yogurt. My clinic approved and I get a huge amt of protein doing this... someone told me though they couldn't handle thickness at a early stage like I can so again ppl are different

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
