Opinions on which surgery to choose?

Recommended Posts

I'm going through Richmond Kaiser Permanente and I have my first appointment with my surgeon tomorrow morning. I'm 95% set on sleeve surgery and feeling very weary of RNY. I'm worried my surgeon will suggest bypass because of my past with heart burn (however since starting my new diet it hasn't happened once). I also can't really have bypass because I have IBS (which has also gotten better with the new diet but still not 100%) so dumping syndrome would obviously be a huge problem for me.

Any advice or insight or same experience???

I'm going through Richmond Kaiser too. Don't have that 4 hour class until next week. I have 4 family members that have had RNY. They all have horrible deficiencies with Iron and B12 and that's with taking Vitamins. My dad almost died from a blockage that was caused by the re-routing. I never was a fan of bypass. How does the process work? I've haven't been able to find out much information on how the process works or how long it takes. I really would like it done this year for financial reasons.

I've had IBS since 2001, and GERD since 2004. I was sleeved about 10 months ago. No IBS or GERD sympt9mes. I have been taking protonix since 2001.

I originally went in for RNY but because of scar tissue from prior surgeries, they had to convert to a sleeve. The more I learn about long-term effects of RNY, the more I think I'm better off with the sleeve. A woman my mom knows had RNY and said the malabsorbtion is really only good for the first couple of years, and after that it's just a hinderance...and she also said she developed celiac disease as a result of the surgery. Malabsorbtion isn't the issue in sleeve surgeries that it is with RNY. My wife also wants surgery and she's still feeling like she wants to do that "gold standard" surgery, but I am starting to think a sleeve is the better way to go.

@@krissyfattofab This is my second time going through the process, the first time I chickened out after the orientation so I had to re enroll so my process is a little different. For you though, after the orientation you either speak with psych or surgeon it doesn't matter which is first. You have to pass psych and the surgeon will set your goal weight for before and after surgery. You'll need to lose about 10% of your weight now. I was 275.5 and I needed to lose 27lbs I've lost 31. After both those appts you'll have a meeting with the case manager that will schedule your surgery date. If you're a smoker you need to wait 3 months of being nicotine free before surgery. If you're not then just until you lose the weight and their next available appt.

You'll also be on a diet plan that seems crazy at first but on my 2nd month is it so unbelievably easy once you get used to using a scale with your food. It drops weight QUICKLY! You'll think you're starving yourself at first but when you learn about your relationship with you'll realize you're not actually hungry it's something else

Thanks @kc13. I'm so ready to get the process going. I lost a lot of weight about 1.5 years ago and weighed everything I put in my mouth. My family thought I was being obsessive but when I stopped doing it I started gaining it back.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
