Diet after Sleeve (fear of my own sabotage)

So maybe the sleeve is no diffrent then any other diet.

You need to learn more at orientation. It's not a diet - both surgeries require a lifestyle change. You can fail or succeed at either. If it were the same as any other diet - insurance wouldn't be paying thousands to have it done.

There is no way short of crack addiction or AIDS that will allow you to lose weight without getting your mind focused and disciplined for the task.

Spend time and do research

Get professional help to get your head wrapped around the effort that will be needed......do this first. Get yourself in the mental place where you will do what must be done to support weight loss.

Do this first and then the sleeve will be a tremendous tool for you.

Free your mind and yer arse will follow.....

That's a joke, my insurance paid nothing for my sleeve. I paid out of pocket. Almost 12k.

You're missing my point - many insurances cover WLS and if it is the same as any other diet (or Weight Watchers) they would not pay. It's far more successful than a "diet".

I also did Dr. Bernstein years ago and wish I'd kept on top of the slow creep back up. I'm 10 days post surgery and it's the best decision I ever made. I'm not hungry much at all and I get full fast. Yes I've heard it's possible to sabotage with this, but I the way I feel about it is that I've been given this amazing opportunity and so I want to protect it my investment. It's still going to be work but it's like climbing a hill instead of Mt. Everest with this tool so far.

Also the thing that finalised my decision is the depressing stats about how low the percentage is of people who keep weight off long term through diet and exercise. The stats are much, much better for WLS patients including VSG. You will find examples of people who regain and sabotage and you will find many examples of success. Statistically the odds are in your favour for success with the surgery. You just have to do your part.

. I can tell you that I was completely on board and committed to every attempt to loose weight before. But I got HUNGRY. How is the sleeve different? I am not inappropriately hungry anymore and loosing the fat so because body fat is hormonally active I will not have all of that influencing my choices.

One last thought. If I am not successful I am going to go down fighting.

Agree 100%. I have tried every diet in the book. I failed every time, the best I ever did was losing 40 pounds on Weight Watchers, but I didn't reach my goal, quit, and gained it all back and more.

@@stefanie0804 when you have dieted in the past were you hungry? I wasn't a fat kid but I was always a big eater, I could never miss a meal, and it took way too much to fill me up.

I can't wait to have my sleeve, I can't wait to feel satisfied with a small to normal amount of food.

@@stefanie0804

This is just my opinion but from years of observing people that have had WLS, the people that "eat the same just smaller amounts" always fail in the long run. They never use the surgery for the mental reset it gives you.

If you really learn nutrition and learn what healthy eating is, you never have to diet. You will never gain weight on veggies, it is impossible to eat enough, spinach for example, to gain weight.

I think using WW is a waste of money and effort. People can just learn to eat properly in the first place.

You have to really mentally be in a place where you want to eat healthy for life and and for the health benefits, not just to lose weight. If you adopt of way of eating that you like and is healthy, you never have to diet and you never have to obsessively watch what you eat.

Like @@Christinamo7 said, the difference with the sleeve is, if your surgery was done correctly and your follow up care is correct (with acid controllers), then you are not hungry. Not being hungry for a solid 6 months or more makes it easy to adapt a healthy eating life style. It because a normal life style choice and not a diet. In the end you feel so much better that you enjoy it and there is no reason to "cheat" and lots of things don't appeal to you. You can't really understand what it is like to not be hungry at all for months on end, it is just something you have to experience, but it makes it 1000x easier to eat healthy.

Yes I've always been hungry, and i find that i look for comfort foods, i dont feel "full" for example till ived had a carb a salad needed somthing more then just salad to make me feel full... maybe because i grew up in an Italian family u ate everything on ur plate and it was all carbs!

Everyone's experiences are different. Any WLS is not a magic fix. We all need to eat healthy and exercise--just for our health. I never got the "gift" of not feeling hungry like some had. The gift I did get was actually knowing when I am full---not sure I ever really knew this before. That being said- I could pack in a lot of calories if I am not following my Protein first then veggies...

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
