Hey I was curious how many calories, and what you are eating/drinking two days post op? I have had one whole shake so far. That is only 160 calories. Is it OK for us to only be taking in 160 cal? Also I am on full liquids, but I am kind of confused about what that means exactly? Thanks everyone! Very thankful for this forum!

Hi. I am also two days post op. I haven't had any Protein yet. My surgeon instructed me to only drink Clear Liquids the first few days. This is what he calls the hydration stage. Your body needs hydration more than Protein in the early post op stage. I've been drinking crystal light, G2, plain Water, clear low sodium chicken broth. I am doing fine so far and not feeling hungry at all.

Congrats!! Yea it seems every surgeon has a different way of starting nutrition. I was just released today from hospital and was on IV fluids the whole time. I am drinking a lot of Water and holding it down good. So you probably aren't getting many calories in either? That makes me feel a little better that that's how it is for everyone prob. I guess there's no way to get 500-700 calories in these early days.

How are you feeling otherwise?

I'm definitely not getting many calories and other than a little discomfort, I feel great. The only issue I'm feeling is bad gas pains. I have medication that the doctor prescribed me for gas, but I read where other people who had the sleeve are using Gas-X thin strips. They dissolve on your tongue. I haven't tried those yet, but may have to try tomorrow. Hopefully it will relieve this gas pressure. I was a band to sleeve conversion.

Yea I feel the gas pains in my stomach and up until last night my shoulder and neck had horrible gas pains in it! I actually thought it was a pulled muscle from surgery or something. I'm gonna try those gas strips too!

I am almost one month post op and I was allowed to drink 2 oz every 15 mins to get my daily 64 oz of Fluid and every hour I had 2 oz of a premium Protein shake. I had decafe coffee, decafe tea, Water, juice diluted with Water, Popsicles, crystal light, puréed Soups and chicken broth. That I started day after surgery

Laney, that's sounds about the same as me. Since you are ahead of me by a few weeks, I'm wondering if you felt sharp pains in your sternum and shoulders? I'm pretty sure these are gas pains but thought I would throw it out there to see if you had this issue. If so, about how long did it last? A couple weeks?

I never had gas pains. I never even took any pain meds after surgery. I had slight discomfort on my left side were they took out my stomach but that was it. I know you should keep moving and that should help the gas pains. I walked every hour on the hour for the first two weeks home. I return to work Tuesday. Dr put me out for a month. I am sorry this does not answer you question. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask me. It will pass the pains

Yes I also had slight discomfort but the gas is what's really bugging. I've been up and walking as well with no problems. I'm actually going to go to the park today to walk and get some fresh air. My surgeon did several other repairs on me since I had a slipped band that did a little damage. (Feels good to have that band removed) He also fixed my hiatal hernia and took care of some scar tissue. Overall, I'm excited to begin my new life. Thanks for the reply and best wishes to you on your journey.

I feel you. The gas pains in my chest and shoulders woke me up. I have been using a heating pad on my left shoulder on and off and it does give me a little relief. If you have a heating pad, maybe give that a try and see if it helps.

I don't think counting calories is important in your first few weeks. Getting all the liquids that you can is the main focus and your Protein. I am 5 weeks out and doing about 800 calories max per day. I just cant eat much but when I do I make sure its loaded with Protein. I'm having a hard time drinking my Water, not sure why.. I used to drink about 100oz, of Water per day before surgery.

The "gas pains" that you hear everyone talking about is the CO2 they pump in your abdomen during laparoscopic Surgery, CO2 gas becomes trapped against the diaphragm causing pain. If you get up and walk early on you can dissipate it from your body. I had this in my shoulders and upper back. It was the most painful part for me.

I'm so happy to read your post. I was concerned with the chest and shoulder pain, but after reading your post it sounds normal. Thanks.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
