biggest decision in Sleeve or Bypass...

@@kraek9

you will continue to have many many big decisions

for example - fish or chicken for dinner LOL

i didn't want the bypass for absorption reasons

i take two medicines to control my epilepsy

couldn't afford it not going through my system completely

i don't think malabsorption is a permanent situation, but it lasts a few years

PC - not sure

bypass "messes" with your insides (organs)

PC again - gastric bypass is considered the Gold Standard

(something like that)

it works great too

doc and i had long talk

pros and cons were explained, (sleeve or bypass) and discussed

i wasn't positive which WLS i wanted to have

initially i thought about the lapband

PC - i'm not saying anything bad about lapband

it works great

i was leaning toward the sleeve

doc thought sleeve was better for me

decision now made

PC (politically correct)

i always cover my little assss in case i'm wrong ;)

i'm almost 5 years PO!!!!

sleeve has assisted me in losing weight

i am maintaining - few fluctuations

very happy!

good luck

kathy

We chose the sleeve after 15 years of uncomfortable WL seminars. Very non-invasive, 30 minute surgery, 8 hours in the hospital, no pain at home, walked the mall four days later. My husband has lost 100 lbs, and we have had zero complications. We have several friends who did the bypass and the lapband. We can eat anything we want to, but we now have the means to keep our weight loss and skip the high carb and high fat meals. We are not hungry, three years later. Best of luck as you decide. Btw we are now 69 and 70. Our health problem, asthma, sleep apnea, HBP, diabetes, etc, have drastically decreased.

@@kraek9 I went with the suggestion from my surgeon. After reviewing my medical and social history - he thought the sleeve would be a good option for me. I do not have acid reflux (which can get worse with sleeve) and I don't have diabetes (recommend RNY) and I don't eat many sweets to want the extra benefit (if you call it that) of dumping syndrome. My eating habits were more too much food at meal time (not a binge eater). I was happy with his decision of sleeve - hopefully I'll be happy after the fact.

I ended up choosing bypass. #1 reason was severe GERD and I had type 2 diabetes along with a slew of other issues. Initially I was going to go with the sleeve but I got a recommendation from both my surgeon and my gastroenterologist who both said there was no doubt for me, bypass was the way to go.

I am very thankful I did it and would do it again in a heartbeat. NO complications, I lost 152lbs and got rid of all those illnesses completely.

Do you research and talk with your doctors. Your current health has a lot to do with your choices.

Best of luck to you!

My husband has been type II diabetic 30 years and I was on Metformin. sleeved. HAppy. Trust your physician or get another one. The sleeve was so non-invasive.

I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. I choose RNY because I had severe acid reflux prior to surgery. The sleeve will only make this condition worse. Also RNY gastric bypass is almost the gold standard. It has been around a long time and most of the bugs have been worked out.

Congratulations on making your decision to have WLS. The correct choice is the one that is best for YOU based upon your expectations and medical condition(s).

Have you performed any research based upon major WLS centers of excellent, published articles from professional societies & journals, etc.?

The sleeve was so non-invasive.

I am half-way through my requirements in order to be sleeved before the end of the year. But in my mind, removing 85% of my stomach is very invasive. Just curious as to why you refer to it as non-invasive? Because it's done laproscopically? Thanks.

I am going through the pre-op process now and have elected the sleeve from the beginning. I have no health complications, just overweight and I think the actual bypass seems much more extreme. I don't want my intestines being cut, the dumping, or the absorption problems for medications. Ideally, I would like to lose 120#. My surgeon agreed with my decision.

Just do a lot of research on both and make your choice based on your needs and recommendations from the professionals.

Anytime a surgeon doesn't have to cut me open I consider it non invasive. But, Really, it's just words here and not a big deal.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
