Need some feedback

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've been a frequent lurker, but I have not interacted on the boards. I now find myself in a position that I'm unsure about and could use some feedback.

I was banded in 2008. I haven't had any problems until semi recently. Two weeks ago all of the Fluid was taken out of my band because I started having bad heartburn while I was sick with a summer cold. Oddly enough, this was just a little over a week after seeing my Lap Band doc and being advised to consider revision to either sleeve or gastric bypass due to not really seeing much in results. My surgery weight was 258. My lowest weight was 221. Current weight is 247. Anyway, since having all of the fluid removed, my body is all kinds of messed up. I can actually eat LESS than I could with the band. I eat, I get heartburn. I get too hungry, I get heartburn. I eat solid foods too close to bedtime, I get heartburn. I'm also experiencing lots of gas and some bloating almost every time I eat something, Yesterday, it happened with Water. Now, I'm on Prilosec per my doctor.

I have an EGD scheduled for Thursday of next week as well as a barium swallow the day after. They've already done an x-ray and they say that my band is in the correct position. So, I'll have some answers soon, but I want to know if anyone has any kind of experiences that might give some clue as to what's happening. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

She's not sure either. I guess I just might have to wait for the EGD and barium swallow. The heartburn is a little better today. I think it might be due to it being my 3rd day on Prilosec. That, and I've been having a Protein Shake for dinner instead of eating. :-)

Yes, I take a generic Prilosec each evening (because I take an NSAID for arthritis), and I try not to eat after 7 pm. That's tough for me sometimes. It does help. Yes, I think it'll be interesting to see the test results. Let us know!

Hello, I had a lap band done in Mexico two and a half years ago. It is a 9cc band. I was going to a local bariatric surgeon for fills. But the problem is he charges me $150 for 1/2 cc fill. I only have about three and a half cc's out of a 9 cc band. My problem is that I don't have any restriction and I actually gained all my presurgical weight. I feel like the doctor is taking advantage of me, and not allowing the band to work properly. I met someone who has 7 cc in her band and she lost more than 100 pounds. So my question for everybody, is what is the idea fill for them?

Well I was banded in 2008, and my band did more harm than good, eventually I was converted in 2011 to a sleeve. I thought my acid reflux would go away but it has gotten worse and I know know have Barret's esophagus. If I would've listened I would've had the bypass done from the very beginning I never really did lose much weight with the band and only minimal with the sleep. I have been to many support groups and I've noticed that the band is useless and almost every single person that I've met in a group has had a revision to either a sleeve or bypass and those who've had the sleeve continue to have issues with the acid if not worse like me but for those who had the bypass could not be happier. I'm hoping to hear from my new surgeon to see if I will get the bypass and give me some relief from my terrible acid reflex. I wish you luck

I am in the same boat as you I actually have my EDG in the morning to see if I am having silent reflux. Had my band put in in jan 2011 and start weight 275 got down to 219 by Aug 2011 and now back up to 275. . Going for a revision to gastric bypass. In hopes to get off hbp meds and diabetes meds again. Good luck and we can do this.

Well, I've lost 90 lbs with the band, so I don't agree that it does not work. I've had a few issues with reflux, but I'm pretty good if I don't eat after 7 p.m.

One thing I hear from people who have the sleeve is some wish they had the band so they could have some control over it (with fills). I live in a small town and I know 2 people who have the sleeve and have lost weight only to regain it. I think a lot of success is based on how you eat and how much and how often.

Well I can't agree with you entirely, I had the band for two years. It was terrible. It almost cost me my life. Erosion and a 7 1/2 hour surgery then was converted to a sleeve which made my acid worse. I lost weight but not enough. I'd eat foods that were easy for me. You are a very small percentage who are successful with a bad. Congratulations. I've spoken to at least half a dozen wls surgeons who will absolutely will not preform the lap band surgery. Only to remove it. I hope you never have to go through with what I went through or with the majority who had it and are having it removed.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
