Many patients find it difficult to meet their daily Fluid and Protein requirements right after surgery. That is because their body is in a major heal mode. So just keep trying and you should get there within the next few weeks.

Many individuals experience changes in the way things taste and smell after surgery. This can make it difficult for some to drink their Protein shakes. It is important that you be able to tolerate Protein Shakes. You do not have to like it, only tolerate it. I hate the taste of Protein shakes. But I did some experimentation until I found something I could tolerate. In the end, I found that I could drink Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Creme) Protein shake powder blended with Water with a half a banana. That was what I could tolerate. But there are many choices out there, many different compositions. If you try them all and still cannot find one you can tolerate then another option is to drink fortified milk.

32 ounces of 1% milk fortified with 1 cup of powdered milk will give you 56 grams of protein. You can mix up a pitcher and drink a little at a time throughout the entire day.

Try some of the other Protein drinks like Isopure, Atkins Lift, Syntrax - they are more of a Water or juice consistency. You can also get unflavored protein powder and mix with broth or a Fluid (Powerade Zero, crystal light). Hang in there! You can do this!!!

I have done tried the unflavored and it does the same thing but thank you soo much

I was choking down Protein drinks until I gave up. I started drinking milk and adding dry milk for extra protein.

You can thin the drinks down with milk or Water. My go-to is 8 oz fair life milk, 10 oz of chilled brewed coffee, and a scoop of either vanilla or chocolate Protein powder. My Protein powder has 27 g of protein, a cup of fair life milk has 13 g, so 40 g right there. Another one I do is skip the coffee, add some extra Water and a tablespoon or two of Peanut Butter powder (adds another 3-6 g of protein.)

I had the same problem the first week or so and then found out I needed to change shakes and for the time being thin them out with skim fair life milk which also adds some Protein.

I cannot tolerate the taste or the nasty grit associated with Protein powders. My team had me pick up some Premier Protein ready made shakes. You can get them at Sam's, costco, and Walmart.< /p>

An 11oz. shake has 30 grams of protein and only 1 gram of sugar. They had me start by taking 1/3 of the shake and mixing it with skim milk about 2/3 milk. As time when on and I was healing better I went to half shake and half milk and finally I was able to drink a whole 11oz. Shake by week 4.

You will have to try some things like this to get you through. The reality is, it is difficult in the beginning to eat enough actual protein from meat and legumes. The Protein Shakes are necessary to keep you healthy so you need to find something that works for you.

Best of luck with your recovery!

The nice thing about the premier shakes djmohr mentioned is the container shape blocks a lot of the smell of the shake. A container with a narrow opening helps a lot. Hold your nose if you have to. I know we aren't supposed to use straws, but I do use them when I blend my own Protein drinks. I prefer the small amount of extra air from the straw to the large amount from the foam on the Protein Shake.

You may just need to try a variety. Some ideas:

Carnation instant Breakfast essentials (no sugar added)

ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates (clear/fruit flavored)

Syntrax nectar

powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury

ProtiDiet hot chocolate

WonderSlim Protein puddings (I like these better than the ProtiDiet)

Isopure

GNC Lean 25

Premier Protein

Also, if the smell bothers you, try drinking from something with a lid.

Have you tried taking lactase (brand name Lactaid) with your Protein drinks? I had a similar reaction to them and the lactase really helps. I just chew up the capsule or let it dissolve in my mouth as I drink the shake. Take it with or before your first gulp. It is the enzyme that helps to digest milk products. The surgery changes gut bacteria and some people have to take the enzyme for a little while after surgery.

Good luck and keep us updated

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
