BMI too high for gastric bypass...so Sleeve it is

Recommended Posts

I'm 5'8 438lb and started my journey in January 2016....at my initial consultation with my surgeon I let the doctor know I was on the fence between the Sleeve and RNY he didn't advised me that I would need to lose weight for either procedure but now wbthat my insurance has approved the wants me to lose 30lb before he would do the bypass...it would have been nice if I told me this 6 months ago, but Im excited and after reading some of the testimonials of the sleevers I'm confident this will be a wonderful tool for me.... hopefully this Monday I will get my surgery date abd in prepped to begin the pre op liquid diet

I'm sorry you don't get to have the surgery you originally chose. There is a lot of success with the sleeve also. I have two coworkers that have had it and have had amazing results. I get sleeved 9/6 and can't wait! I hope you get your surgery date soon. Keep

us updated!

Best of luck to you. I was sleeved 11 months ago and have lost 149 pounds so far. If you stick to the program and exercise as you are able too you can lose just as well with the sleeve. My surgeon keeps telling me I have lost at the same rate as his bypass patients.

Thanks for the encouragement you guys....I got my surgery date today, 10/6....a month from you @smashley23...I think I will be satisfied with the sleeve and I'm read to put in the work....I keep hearing "stick to the program" I know there is a prescribe diet for the first 6 weeks post op, but what about after that?.... I plan on sticking to a low carb diet post op is this what's recommended?

I was sleeved April 20, 2015 with a much higher weight and BMI than you and couldn't be happier with my decision, surgery, recovery, and progress so far.

Best of luck with your surgery. Keep us posted on how you are doing.

Congratulations on getting your date!! It's so exciting but waiting is excruciating. I was supposed to be sleeved last week but had to have my gallbladder out. He was going to do both if it was safe at the time. I was bummed it didn't happen, but I completely understand. I was mentally ready for it. Now I'm just biding my time healing up for round two in the OR. High Protein low carb seems to be the way to go once you are healed. Also lots of exercise. I'm rearranging local personal trainers and hoping to have one by Christmas. I'm ready to rock this! We will have to be surgery buddies!

the good thing is that you will likely be successful with the sleeve. if it does not get you where you want to be perhaps you will be low enough to revise to the bypass if needed. I think that's how the sleeve began.

my highest weight was 465 and the day of surgery (6/14/2016) I was 442. as of today I am 386.. I too originally wanted the bypass but my surgeon suggested the sleeve and if I wanted to later down the road I could get the bypass. but the sleeve is such an amazing tool I absolutely love it! I think you will do well with the sleeve also! good luck to you :)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
