Newbie Here! My story so far...

Hello Everyone!

I figured it was time to join a forum because I'm sure I'm driving my friends crazy with all the VSG talk! Anywho, my name is Erin and I am 32. After many years of struggling with my weight decided to look into the VSG on July 28th. On that day I quit smoking (cold turkey), quit drinking alcohol, and coffee! I attended my first seminar on Aug 8th and it made me feel like this is definitely the right decision for me. Thankfully my family and friends are all very supportive so it helps. I have my first appointment with my surgeon on August 26 to go over the insurance and surgery requirements. I don't think I have any cormobidies but my BMI is 45.

Today I went to get a check up with my PCP and am scheduled for an ultrasound due to some stomach pain I have been having. He is worried it may be my spleen. I'm hoping it is nothing that will hinder me getting my surgery. I asked my PCP how he felt about wls and he is absolutely against it. He said he would rather me try medication to curb my appitite, because in his experience wls patients gain the weight back. I think I need a new PCP. Luckily my surgery program said they will write the letter of medical necessity for the insurance approval if I am a good candidate.

I am very excited to meet with the surgeon and finally get the ball rolling. My plan is to get that checklist completed ASAP so I can be one step closer to a healthier version of myself!

Thanks for reading my story!

@@PNWsleever Welcome! I hope your ultrasound doesn't show anything serious. What makes your PCP think it's your spleen? How's your bloodwork? Let us know how you make out!

He thinks it may be my spleen simply because of the location. It's in my upper left quadrant and I sometimes feel the pain in my ribs. No other symptoms. I did bloodwork for him on Friday so I hope to know more soon. They said the results should take about a week or two to get back.

Does your surgeon have a medical doctor that will be seeing you during the process? Mine did and I quickly made her my primary. I figured since she was following my through this and would know my inside and out it made sense. Plus you will have a PCP that understands bariatric patients and their needs. I hope all works out with your labs.

Thank you! I will definitely ask my surgeon if he has a medical doctor on his team. Even if he knows the names of some his other patients use would be helpful for me to make the switch! Great idea!

Ultrasound results are in and everything looks good! I do have 2 small cysts on my left kidney but they are of no cause for concern. I'm sitting in the waiting room at my first consultation with my surgeon now. Will update more later!

My frustration level is high today. It's been almost 2 weeks since my consultation with my surgeon and he STILL has not sent in the orders for my testing. I can't make any appointments or do anything until he does. What's worse is I am loosing my paid Dr. Visit benefits at work in 3 weeks. I called his medical staff today and asked them why it's taking so long? They said they will send a message to his nurse and she would call as soon as the orders go out. Perhaps I need to chill but I cant. I just want to get these tests over with!

I'm new here too!! I'm 26/ 5'5.5 / 279lbs. Been on the larger side since I was in middle school. I had my first consultation on Wednesday. Still deciding between RNY and the Sleeve. I am a Private Payer. I have a follow up visit on October 18th and looking to have all of my appointments complete by then. Blood work is done and everything is scheduled except for the sleep test and the nutritionist visit! I'm so excited and anxious for the future!!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
