Would you do it again?

Hi. I have just decided on having the sleeve. I am not planning on getting it done until June (I work in a school, so i'll have the Summer to recover) my feelings are flip flopping from super excited, to nervous, embarrassed that I let myself get to this point. I have always been a bad eater LOTS of carbs. I KNOW it's going to be hard, but I also KNOW I am ready. I'm afraid of throwing up.I have NOT thrown up in 40 years, since I was a kid. That part scares me. Plus, is 2 months long enough to be physically back to "normal?"And my biggest question...THose of you that have the sleeve.....WOULD YOU DO IT AGAIN???

Thank you

I'd do it again except maybe I'd this time I'd do it when I was younger :-( So many years feeling like crap.

Hi Cape Crooner - great post. One question - when you say drop out of any or all social events - do you mean forever or just in the losing phase? I'm a very social person, especially love hanging out with my girlfriends, so not sure what to think of that advice! As for who to tell - if I can pull it off, only my husband will know I've had WLS.

@@TracyBar - I only mean for the pre-opt diet (which in my case was 2 months) and then the majority of the weight lost phase. If it doesn't bother you to be around others in a social setting overeating, drinking beer, and raving about all their homemade Desserts, GOD BLESS YOU - go! Not me, I was much happier staying home, watching football or a movie and following my diet plan in peace.

A lot of women in my support group mentioned that they came from families with lots of obese women who took strong offense if someone didn't eat all their Pasta salads, mac & cheese, lasagna, cake, Cookies, etc, etc at a family event (and there were usually 2-3 family events a week).

Well that makes sense then - I'm not sure I'd be very successful either if I had to be around too much food when I'm trying to lose weight. I've really paid attention to how many food commercials there are on tv these days. Think I'll be watching Netlix and reading instead of watching t.v.!

No, I wouldnt. Yes, I'm losing weight like crazy, yes, I feel healthier, and am healthier, but no, I would not do it again. I would work my ass off and just stick to the pre-op diet to lose weight. I just have a weird feeling every single day that I wake up. I dread eating because of the pain, yet long to taste flavor. I'm only 26, so I feel like I should have buckled down one last time and tried to lose on my own again. I'm only 1 month post op, so this feeling could go away soon, but for now I wish I had never gotten the surgery. Nothing tastes good to me, and my biggest concern is that I can't chug Water anymore without severe pain. I also get nauseous every single time I have to take a Vitamin. I'm sure one day I'll come to appreciate the pouch, but for now it's my worst enemy.

It takes time. Just take it slowly. It will get better. Trust me. 12 weeks out and I ve re-started to drink water...food is still a problem some days, especially protein. But I am happy I am no longer turning to food for comfort and I have managed to stay away from sweets for the past 16 weeks. Felt sick once because I ate too fast but apart from that it's all been fine. Remember ur pouch won't hurt you as long you don't hurt it first. Good luck.

Keep your head up! I wish I would have gotten it at your age. I just did mine and I am having the same issues as you are but on the liquids. Used to love water now I hate it. Have to have flavoring in it just to drink it but I hate the flavoring also lol. I cant stand the taste of anything just about. I thought I was picky before, holy crap I think I am going to be pickier lol. Taking the Vitamins are hard for me, I got some Fair Life milk (has 13 gr of Protein and is better for you than reg milk) and it helps the pills go down easier. My nut told me about that. I cant drink too much of it cause anything with a little bit of thickness makes me queasy. I hope food don't do that to me but I am sure it will. Everything smells good but the thought of eating it makes me leary lol. Good luck! I am sure this all will get better!

@@CNOEL3 Being able to chug water will come back. It took me maybe 2-3 months to get to that point. One thing you may want to try is different temperatures of water. I have found that ICE COLD water (with ice literally floating in it) is MUCH easier for me to drink than room temp water or even just a chilled bottled water. I bought an insulated water bottle that keeps my ice in ice form all day long at work and that has helped tremendously.

@@CNOEL3 You need to also remember that although you may have been able to lose weight on your own - there's only a 5% chance of being able to keep that weight off. I told myself for many years I could do it on my own - and unfortunately waited until I got up to 300lbs with several comorbidities (and 48 years old) before I realized I couldn't. You are early out - give yourself time to heal.

This is certainly true. I always considered my sleeve to be "weight maintenance surgery" instead of "weight loss surgery". I have lost hundreds of pounds "on my own" over the years. At one point I even lost 90 pounds in about a year. Several more times I lost 40-50 pounds. And I can't even count the number of times I lost 20-25 pounds. I always said that if losing weight was an Olympic event, I'd be a multi-time gold medal winner. But what I truly truly sucked at was keeping it off! When I began considering VSG, I was back to within 10 pounds of my highest weight, staring down the barrel of another year-long diet to get back to a reasonable weight, and knowing that in two years, I'd gain all the weight right back. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It was time to change the game!

So far it seems to have worked! Since reaching goal just about a year post-op, I've now been maintaining for a full year with no sign of impending regain!

I heard that after a while, you WILL be able to chug water again. I haven't had surgery yet, but I have heard tgat the pain goes away and that things do get better. I am 44, and I feel like if I wait any longer, it will be too late for me. I'm ready to start living my life. I haven't "lived" yet. My weight has taken everything away from me and I want it back! I want my confidance and energy back. I want to run and play with my nieces, I want to play softball again. I want to find someone to spend the rest of my life with, and right now, at this weight (270) I don't see ANY of that happening. I hope things get better for you.

@@CNOEL3 - hang in there. I haven't had the surgery yet - doing my research. But keep popping on to get support and let us know how you're doing after each week goes by. You could be experiencing a hormone dump maybe as well?

Thanks so much for all the support. I do hope it gets better, and it could be the hormone dump since my stupid period has been crazy since surgery too. I dont mean to discourage anyone from getting surgery, just giving my honesty.

That's ok - you should feel you can speak how you need to in here. I've read similar posts like yours from people in the early days/weeks after surgery. Of course it gives me pause, but I think overall there are so many people in here that have had great success and are much happier now than before. Keep us posted!

Yup, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I never had any throwing up. I did have a hard time with nausea right after surgery and it lasted about a day and a half. Because of that I ended up staying an extra night in hospital but that wasn't a big deal. Pain was minimal, it felt like I had done a horrendous ab workout. I have a physical job so I was out for 4 weeks.

But here I am now, 3 months and 10 days out and 65 lbs lighter. I still have a long way to go but I am thrilled at my progress so far. I've just emptied half my closet of things that don't fit me anymore and am looking forward to shopping!

In just 3 months my quality of life has improved so much, I can't wait to see what the future will bring :)
