Hi everyone!

I know that we can eventually have oysters and sashimi, but I'm wondering if they're acceptable options on the soft foods plan? And, if so, if anyone tried them & what their sleeve's reaction was. These are my two favorite foods, so I want to reintroduce them successfully!

I am only 10 days out from surgery, but I'm SO excited to eat real food that I'm meal planning now to kill some post-surgery, recovery boredom.

I believe that "eventually" contraindicates raw fish and shellfish as "soft foods now." Tough, rubbery and chewy don't qualify. Maybe later.

My sympathies. I further believe that oysters on the half-shell and sashimi are reasons to live.

I wouldn't consider them soft foods. It's too early on. Sorry. On a good note, I eat shellfish all the time, no problems with my sleeve , raw and broiled, but I'm 8 months post op. Be patient , good things will come

On my plan sashimi was considered a soft food. I could start having it 2 weeks out. I has some raw tuna at 4 weeks and I was fine. I don't normally eat raw oysters so I didn't ask about that.

Lol, I enjoyed everyone's apologetic responses. Hey, a girl can dream! Day 40 will be spent enjoying blue points and day 41 will be sashimi day. Perhaps 42 will be escargot....mmm then king crab! ❤️ #seafoodsleever

I ate sashimi in my 2nd week post-op. Great source of Protein and my sleeve was just fine with it. Of course everyone is different so I would recommend chewing (1) check with your NUT for YOUR program specifics, (2) if you do try it, eat softer fish like tuna, salmon, hotate (scallop), or Suzuki (sea bass). If you can make requests, have the cut the fish really thin, chew SMALL bites REALLY WELL and (3) take one bite, then wait a few minutes to see how your sleeve accepts it. I would do this with each different fish.

Also I would stay away from tougher fishes and other types such as octopus and eel for now. I don't think I would attempt oysters this early personally, but that's up to you. Check with your surgeon/nut before trying anything not specifically listed on your "approved" list for the stage your in.

So, my program says eat whatever you want besides high carb/high fat food/high sugar as of day 40 (no Pasta, bread, rice, alcohol, soda, etc).

To clarify, you are recommending that I should wait longer than the 40 days to reintroduce these seafoods (besides soft sashimi, everyone seems to agree that's okay)?

I'm excited, but I don't want to push it. I can see how escargot might be too rubbery to introduce so early.

It seems like oysters and crab would be a fine consistency? Or should I give it until 3 months?

I think his recommendation was simply a general "have patience".

Fear not, you'll have plenty of very tasty food items to eat later on. No need to worry about it now.....in fact, it was really a nice benefit for me during the pre & post liquid stage to not even think about food. It was a great relief and key to becoming non food-focused.

@@LowBMISleever Not necessarily. Could be less, could be longer than 40 days. Everyone heals differently. I would definitely check with your surgeon/nut before trying ANYTHING new/not on your specific list for your current stage as they (and you) are the only ones who know where you specifically are in your journey.

The main thing is just to have patience. When you do try new things, try them slowly. Introducing new foods is a key part of moving forward, but trying to rush it can be painful and even harmful.

Take it slow, check with doc/NUT anytime you're not sure, and in time you'll be able to enjoy a great variety of seafood. Even when foods "seem" like they'd be easy to get down/digest, they may not be. For me, things that are "soft" like shrimp took a while for me to be able to eat for whatever reason, yet I had no issues with tuna sashimi. On the contrary, I couldn't eat seared tuna at all because it just didn't feel good...so you have to check each food with small bites and wait and see how they are 'accepted'. Patience is key and worth it's wait in gold here. I know it can be hard, but it's worth it. You're still healing so keep it simple during that time.

Sashimi is probably fine, I was allowed fish on softs, as with everything you'll know pretty quickly if your sleeve doesn't like it. Definitely avoid rice.

My plan allowed fish -raw or cooked as a soft food and I had sashimi as soon as I could start soft foods (2 weeks post-op). It went fine, I ate it with the ginger and low sodium soy sauce. I could only eat 2oz so about 2 1/2 pieces of tuna or salmon. I also had steamed lobster. I don't like cooked fish so have not tried.

I can have oysters and other shellfish as well, but obviously have to chew. I am open to this but not sure how much I will enjoy chewing oyster as opposed to normal way of eating them raw. I may try on vaca soon.

I hate escargot one week out and sashimi within 2 weeks. I took very small bites and digested just fine. You have to find what works best for you and your new sleeve. You will know immediately what doesn't work.

I had a great experience eating sashimi at 2 1/2 weeks post op, which is when it was allowed by my plan. Great source of lean protein!

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

      Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
