Weight loss before surgery

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering how much weight your surgeons told you you have to lose before surgery. I just found out I have to do 6 months medically supervised diet before approval so I'm worried that I won't lose enough in that time or that I will get obsessed and lose too much and the insurance will think I can do it on my own and deny me

You need to find out exactly what your insurance and your surgeon require, then you can plan for that and make sure you hit your goals. Insurance policies and surgeons are all different. Some require you to lose a certain amount, others require you to not gain, and still others require you to "fail" at weight loss in your supervised diet. Speak to your insurance coordinator at your surgeon's office and make sure you know exactly what is expected of you. That way you can plan for it and do it -- and trust me, you can! But you need to know exactly what you are aiming for, and that's something that no one on this forum can tell you. Good luck!

You need to talk to your surgeon's office. All plans (insurances) have different requirements with that 6 month supervised diet. Some require weight loss and no gain, others require no loss but no gain, some it doesn't matter, etc. Some surgeons require a weight loss (not insurance related.).

I concur with what @@KristenLe and @@Bufflehead have stated.

Because I already had a documented history of weight loss attempts with my primary care physician, I was not required to do a 6 month supervised diet. So, as they have said, every insurance carrier and WLS program is different.

I guess it depends, my insurance didn't require any weight loss but it did require I attempted to lose weight. My dr said that they have the 6 month requirement to increase your chances of being successful. I didn't lose any weight at all during the six months but have lost more than 15 lbs during my pre op liquid diet. Best of luck!

My insurance requires a 3 month medically supervised diet. I don't need to lose a specific amount, just not have any gains. My dotor, however, said to shoot for losing 5lbs a month. I'm almost done with my first month and I'm down 10lbs, so I hope this lasts 2 more months!

The nurse told me you have to loss 14%of your weight, all I lost was 14 lbs before surgery & I started out at 299 pre-op, day of surgery I weighted 285. Just do the 2 Protein drinks one for Breakfast, one for lunch& lean cuisine are the best tasting dinners,in a couple days, you'll get use to it!!! You'll do great!!!!!

I wasn't required to lose weight either. Maybe it depends on the patient's medical history and how prepared the Team feels we are. I couldn't lose weight - that's why I'm having surgery. I lost 3 lbs in my 3 month of nutrition visits. I'm not one who can lose but just doesn't maintain - I have a hard time losing in the first place.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
