Nighttime leg cramping.

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone

I'm about a month post-op and I've had leg cramping nearly every night since surgery. My doctor suggested I up my salt intake in the evenings by drinking bone broth but that doesn't seem to be working. Has anybody else experienced this? If so any suggestions on how to manage this?

my first thought is possibly mild dehydration. are you getting all your Water in each day?

@@ag0177 It could be dehydration, low potassium, low Calcium, etc. I would also be concerned about a blood clot (DVT). Try using some compression stockings to see if that helps. Try drinking something with electrolytes. Depending on the stage you are in - you could add some foods with potassium - Beans, bananas, squash, potatoes (with skin), yogurt, avocado. If it gets worse - don't hesitate to call your Dr again - blood clots are extremely serious - but so is low potassium.

I used to get leg cramps prior to surgery and then some after surgery. Not an every day event, but a once in a while type occurrence. Normally they occurred when I was sleeping. I would get up out of bed and put some pressure on my leg for a few minutes and then it would start to go away. Sometimes I took an over the counter medication specifically designed for nighttime leg cramps.

@@KristenLe mentioned that potassium in bananas might help. After a few months after surgery, I began blending in a half a banana into my Protein shakes. A typical banana has 422 mg of potassium. So that might account for the fact that for most of my 3 years post-op I have not been bothered too much with that condition.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
