Dress size vs pounds

Recommended Posts

Kind of depends on how you are shaped and style of dress but if I had to guess, I would say at high plus sizes about every 15 to 20 pounds drops a size. As you get smaller that transitions to about every 10 pounds (or at least it did for me). I started at around size 24 and after 150 pounds lost, I landed at size 12 (maybe a 10 if it ran a little large). Hope that helps! PS I found I went thru pant sizes like crazy. Try to buy used if you can. Check out Poshmark.com for some great used clothes. You can sort by brand and by size and often find stuff for a low price (not to mention a great way to sell some of your clothes once they are too big!)

I've lost 142lbs and have gone from a 30/32 to a size 12 or Large. It does vary by brand and cut though. Good luck!!!

When I started out at size 36 it took me about 40 lbs to lose a size (I am 5'4). As I lost weight, the number of pounds needed to drop a size got lower and lower. It helps to think of it as a losing a percentage of your body mass rather than a number of pounds. As I approached maintenance and single digit sizes (!!! I never thought I would wear a size 8!) it got to be more like 10 lbs or less to drop a size.

Throughout my life and during any of my weight loss efforts, including having been sleeved, my body typically will change a clothing size every 15-20 lbs. It does depend on style and the particular piece of clothing. My shoe size has stayed basically the same, again depending on style of the shoe - either a 7 1/2 or 8 medium width.

Man this is a though question. Mainly because I skipped sizes. I started off a UK size 32 ish, probably larger, I don't think many clothes even come that large in the UK. Now I wear a UK 16 or 18, it depends because my breasts are huge and I am hippy. The last time I ordered a UK 20 and this was 20 months ago, it arrived and it was like a tent dress, lol.

I think a lot of people don't buy new clothes or change sizes as they lose weight. I have a friend that lost 200 lbs on her own and kept it off for over 6 years, and she told me as soon as you drop a size get new clothes that fit and donate the old ones. Which is what I have been doing and it is a great motivator.

So anyway. I wasn't really fitting into my clothes that well anyway, I was probably almost a size larger, but a size larger was too big. So the first 20lbs, I went down a size. Then I lost 30ish pounds kind of fast and went down 2 sizes. Then another 30lbs I dropped a size. Then I hovered a lot between sizes and it really depending on the style and fit. My issue is my waist is getting smaller, my back fat is disappearing, my legs have lost a lot but I have a lot in my hips and breasts. My arms are still huge so the prevent me from wearing smaller tops.

So anyway I would say a good 20-30 lbs per plus size. And then once you are out of plus sizes, I think maybe 10lbs you can drop a size, maybe 15.

The problem with clothes is they aren't cut uniform and there is a lot of variation so unless you wear the same brand all the time, it is hard to say how much per size.

Also I notice my weigh drops and then my body settles and it changes. Like my shape seems to rearrange on a weekly basis. It is annoying. So something might fit right one day and not the next week, or it may look different. When I am in a stall, my body goes through major changes. I am in a losing phase right now, so my shape is going to be pretty constant until, I stall again.

That was long winded but I hope it helps. The size changes are maddening.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
