I was chatting with someone who mentioned that after having WLS their food allergies lessened a LOT. I was wondering if this is common? I have a lot of food allergies and would LOVE to not have them anymore. Has anyone else here seen their food allergies go away or lessen after WLS?

Now, THAT would be wonderful!

I am extremely allergic to all Beans and peas-----especially soybeans.

Those nasty little buggers have sent me to intensive care four different times. Soy is in EVERYTHING!--even canned tuna! Yep. it's true :(

Anyway, I am going to follow along with this thread. Maybe there's some news about this topic.

I am 5+ years out and so far no difference. Oh, bother. :)

Two of my worst allergies are peanuts and all seafood (not just shellfish). Do you know how hard it is to eat low carb when you're allergic to both of those?

I thought the bean thing was tough.

Good luck. Maybe we'll hear something new during this new thread.

Thank you, O.P. ! :)

I am allergic to so many fruits. Peaches, cantaloupe, kiwi, pear, banana, mango...

I am allergic to raw shrimp but not cooked, pine needles (Christmas tree!), pine nuts, lobster...

Oy!

Surgery hasn't changed a thing.

I'll test it out after my surgery, but that's not for quite a while.

Currently it sounds like perhaps the person I was talking to was just a fluke. Sadness.

As far as the raw shellfish and pine needles ...

I know that sounds odd. When I peel shrimp or decorate the Christmas tree, my hands swell up. I can eat cooked shrimp, though.

That said, they say allergies can worsen with age. My dad is allergic to shellfish and I am terrified that I am developing that. I love shrimp, crab, mussels, clams... I can't imagine giving those up.

Hi guys. This is not the first time I've tried to bump a thread about food allergies or celiac but I really am curious to speak with other sleepers/WLS patients who are in the same boat.

I was diagnosed with celiac thanks to the upper endoscopy that was part of my pre-op requirements and a subsequent blood test as well. So I'm learning a gluten free lifestyle as well as the post WLS lifestyle. I think the two play nicely with each other.

I also have a lifelong allergy to shellfish, tree nuts, and rice. I always ignored my rice allergy because it caused no symptoms that I knew of but now I am taking it seriously and discussing w/ my new BFF - my GI doc. Plus- no room for rice on my post sleeve diet at this stage anyway. I also have allergic skin reactions to watermelon and kiwi.

Anyone else with similar issues?

Sleevers not sleepers.....

Ah thank you @@KristenLe ! I am stil so new at the celiac thing (and the sleeve thing) that I didn't think to check Vitamins. I just did and they are all good.

I see you are a fellow shellfish allergy sufferer....I wish I could eat shellfish as well. Looks delicious and like a great healthy source of Protein.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
