Has anyone had a sleep study done and had to go back? If so did it prolong you getting your surgery date? If you had to use the machine how long was you on it? Please help I am worried that it cause me not to be able to get my WLS

The sleep study can confirm if you have sleep apnea. If you do, they generally prescribe a CPAP machine and request that you use it when you sleep. I believe your surgeon will want you to bring in the CPAP during your time in the hospital and will request that you continue to use it after surgery.

In my case, there was a good chance that I had sleep apnea, because for several years prior to surgery my wife could not get any sleep at night because I snored and she was a light sleeper. As a result because of this condition, they scheduled a second round of pre-op testing with a specialist. I met with a neurologist who examined me and recommended a sleep study. I declined and told him that I understood that RNY gastric bypass surgery is known to affect this condition for the better and if I still had a problem after surgery, I would make an appointment and see him for the study. Based on that he passed me for the surgery.

Within a few weeks after surgery, my snoring stopped. I would wake up in the middle of the night and find my wife standing, hovering over me. I was sleeping so quietly that she thought I might have died and was trying to determine if I was still alive.

My doctor required the sleep study. If you needed a CPAP machine, he required 30 days of sleeping with it, and also stated several times that if you did not bring the machine with you to the hospital, he would cancel the surgery. There are real cases of complication from not being able to breath correctly after anesthesia. My doctor is a real stickler about it, and I had no choice but to comply (I couldn't say that it would go away after weight loss).

I am using "Horton" now, and quite honestly, after getting used to him, I sleep better and so does my spouse. I do, however, look forward to the day that Horton goes in the closet ;)

If the initial test showed apneas - sometimes you go back for a titration and fitting. Then they order the machine and surgeons usually require 30 days of compliance (monitored like Big Brother). I got mine prior to my WLS journey (my PCP thought it may help with weight loss - it didn't). This process could take some time based on the schedule of the sleep clinic/pulmonologist.

My Doctor is Ronnie Keith in Oklahoma City.

I was lucky and was able to do a sleep study at home. Once I did that it only took a few days to get back in to the sleep study office and pick up my cpap. I tried on different ones, and came up with the best solution for me.

Who is your doctor

My doctor told me essentially the same thing that James wrote. Although I haven't shown any signs of apnea, his opinion is that patients show a remarkable improvement post surgery.

I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea for about 5 years using machine. I had surgery last week. Just had to see a separate dr. To get checked and make sure everything is working with sleep apnea and cpap. No big deal at all.

I had to go back after diagnosed with mild apnea. It took a 3 months total get the testing, machine, insurance approval, etc. I then had to wait 30 days after getting the machine and have the results sent to my surgeon before they would schedule my surgery.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
