Pre- op diet: shakes are so horrible

Recommended Posts

I am on my two week pre- op liquid diet and I am struggling to choke down the vanilla shakes ...any advice? I have switched from Water to milk and it is slightly more tolerable

I also used Premier Protein shakes, I bought case of vanilla but then would change it up at home. I would put one shake in blender, half banana, 2 tbs of PB2 and some ice and blend it. It was delicious.

You can add all kinds of flavors, I would also blend it with handful of frozen strawberries or sugar free coffee syrups etc.

I really enjoy the Syntrax Nectar shakes. These are made from whey Protein isolate and meet all the protein/carbohydrate/fat requirements from my NUT. I make them with unsweetened plain almond milk (almond breeze- OK'd by my NUT) for the shake flavors or Water for the juice flavors, and they are really good. If you go to their website (si03) you can order a sampler pack for $17 (incls. shipping). They will send you a single serving of each of their 15 flavors. I order the 2 lb cans from luckyvitamin.com for about $33 (it works out to less than $1 per serving).

How much more do you have on this diet?

I know it's hard, I am on week 4 of liquid diet now (2 pre op) and now 2nd post op it's definitely easier post op, but hang in there, it will benefit you during your surgery.

Protein "shakes" are very different in taste. I like powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury because I've used it for such a long time (had band in 2004) but even find it tastes different. I'm on final stages of pre-op and have finally figured out how to make a great tasting "chicken soup" using Unjury. I also like the Premier Protein shakes. I used to like the unflavored Unjury in crystal light but am not finding it to be "not so" tasty. In the grand scheme of things the Protein "shake" problem is short term as you will be eating your protein not drinking. Good luck.

I had a really hard time with mine at first too. I got crystal light packets in with it, and it made all the difference in the world.

I found most Protein Drinks more palatable when mixed with twice as much water/milk as instruction say. I diluted the RTD 1/2 and 1/2 with milk. Also use Torani syrups to vary the flavor. Syntax nectar, muscle milk, Quest and premier are my favorite brands. Others like Bariatric Advantage and Isopure were downright disgusting.

sugar free Syrup help. I added sugar free chocolate and caramel flavored coffee/tea syrups to spice up my shakes.

I have tried Soooo many brands and still can't choke them down. So I use dannon light and fit greek yougart with 18 grams of Protein in a cup. I add Water and blend fruit up in it and ice and blend. I am post op so you probably can't add fruit.

Yes... it's a little awkward, because there's nothing to click on. Go to the si03.com page. Move your cursor over the top right grey quadrant, where it says "Monthly Special". The quadrant will change to a green background that says "Nectar Variety Sampler" and give you the number to call. Yes, you can only call, not order online, but they know exactly what you are talking about. It's quick and painless once you call.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
