Switching from bypass to sleeve

Recommended Posts

So I have my surgery tomorrow morning, I am really considering changing my surgery to sleeve. I was all set in doing the gastric bypass, but after talking to people and researching I think the best decision would be sleeve.

Has anyone done this before?

Help!

Does your surgeon know your indecision? I would think that the operative set-up would need to be switched out.

I changed from bypass to sleeve, but did so a month before my surgery. l needed to be home the same day. The sleeve surgery allowed me to do that.

I talked to him last Monday that I wasn't sure which one I wanted to do.

I know it's my decision and can change, just don't want to delay my surgery.. Especially since I have waited 6-months and been on a 2 week liquid diet:

I hope you were able to make your decision and are satisfied with it. I changed from bypass to sleeve mostly because of worries about malabsorption and dumping syndrome (which I already experience to a degree due to having no gall bladder anymore). I was worried about this, though, because the NUTs always say that you lose less with the sleeve. Then I talked with a friend who has the sleeve, and she's lost all her weight and more. She said that the amount you lose is ultimately up to you; if you stick to your food regimens and maintain an active exercise program, you can lose what you want. I know it worked for her, and it helped me to ultimately decide to have the sleeve. Surgery is 5/26/16. Good luck to you!!

Your friend is right. I almost let the "you lose more weight with the bypass" thing change my mind about the sleeve. 175 lbs lost, surpassed goal, and still losing, and I can tell you - how much you lose is all up to you. Work hard, follow your plan, and you can lose it all AND more with the sleeve, just like the bypass. Good luck with your surgery!!

The actual research on thousands of patients (not random comments by NUTs or others who "... have a brother-in-law who had WLS ....") says that gastric bypass and sleeve patients lose the same amount of weight, but bypass patients lose faster. A couple of years out, neither group has lost more than the other group.

Since this is a procedure that cannot be undone, if you are feeling unsure why not go with the less invasive procedure? If you find that overtime the sleeve does not work for you, the bypass is always there. As a general rule of thumb, I tend to go with the less invasive, less extreme medical procedure if I find myself with the condition that needs to be treated by Western medicine. I have the sleeve. And I love it!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
