Revision Surgery Requirements

Hi All,

Im new to this forum and site. Im trying to get information on what others went through when they had a revision surgery from Lap-Band to Sleeve. I have an appointment with a doctor this Friday and have called another doctor to schedule a consultation. My main question is whether they made you go through all the requirements again and how long did the process take before you had a surgery date scheduled. In cases where you were denied were you given the reason as to why you were denied.

Unless you're paying your own way, you'll do better to focus on your insurance plan.

Will you say where in NY you're located? And why you're seeking revision? I may need to revise, but have been putting off seeing my surgeon. I had the band done at Columbia UMC.

I'm going through the process of having a revision surgery. I lost 20 pounds with the lapband but I had complications. My surgeon told me that he can not perform the revision if my BMI was lower than 35. Long story short, I had to gained all my weight back and start from 0 in order to qualify for a revision surgery. I'm at 35.5 BMI right now and I have several health problems. My insurance and surgeon require documented lap-band complications and compliance with follow-up Lapband appointments (for the Lapband removal part), at least 35 BMI and 1 comorbidity, 6 months diet, pschy evaluation, documented active methods of weight loss (gym memberships, etc), 1 surgeon visit and 1 NUT visit. I'm submitting to insurance this week.

I'm going to a center of excellence so their requirements are super strict. Every surgeon is different and I hope you can find one that help you through this process, good luck!

I am going through my insurance and they referred me to an Institute of Excellence. My location was incorrect. Im actually in CA.

I want to get revision because I had complications with the lap band 3 years ago to a point where I couldnt even drink Water. So I had them release everything from the band and I still have restrictions some time. SInce then I have gained 40 lbs. When I had the lap band I was at 250 and went down to 180 and now Im at 222. Its just not working for me anymore.

Hi,

I did my 6 months of nutritional visits last year. I started to request medical records on March of this year and I had my first consultation with the surgeon April 12. After that, I took 2 mandatory classes and I have my psychological evaluation done 2 weeks ago. I received the results of the evaluation yesterday and my doctor is submitting to insurance today or Monday. Do you know your insurance requirements? Some insurances do not require the 6 months diet, so the process goes a lot faster in this case.

Hi there! I had a band for 6 years and it broke. Overall I did ok with it.. Went from 197 to 162 and was quite happy. Was very bummed to hear it was broken. Actually, I was horrified. My surgeon told me not to worry- he would revise to a sleeve. Two months later, I was sleeved (April 20th). I was a self pay in the Dominican Republic for my band but my insurance picked up the entire thing this time. I didn't have to go to any classes or counseling. My BMI was 34 when revised. I will say this in retrospect- going back to classes is a good thing. The band is very different from the sleeve and the rules are different. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my sleeve and feel fantastic. Tons of energy and down 15 pounds in 3 weeks. I'm thrilled. I wish you the best, let me know if you have any questions!
