I assume you are pre-op?

If you have to "nibble" something, then make sure it is something allowed on your diet: sugar-free Popsicle, crushed ice, another Protein shake. If you are allowed non-starchy vegetables then you can "nibble" those.

You DO NOT want to risk having your surgeon closing you up without doing the surgery because you couldn't follow your program for the required amount of time. I cannot imagine any "nibble" being worth that.

If you are unsure about what is allowed on your pre-op diet, then call your NUT and ask.

You CAN do this!

It's not too late - and cleaning you out isn't the issue - it's to shrink your liver. Just stick with the diet from here on out. Good luck! Stopping the nibbling habit now will help you post-op too.

It depends on what you are nibbling. If it's any sort of carbs, then your liver won't shrink, because it will still be storing glycogen. The way the pre-op diet shrinks your liver is by putting your body into ketosis, which depletes your liver's glycogen stores.

Thank you so much I feel a little more encouraged...do you know if I can warn my chicken broth?

I'm going to play with your head a little. You're on a restricted number of food choices right now (both what you can have and amounts). Surprise, this is exactly what you will be doing postop. This is your dress rehearsal.

You're hungry. That makes you uncomfortable. I get it. You know what? Postop, you won't be able to soothe your uncomfortable feelings by eating. You won't be hungry, not physically hungry. And you'll have to learn another way of dealing with uncomfortable feelings than eating to cover them up. Dress rehearsal again.

Sometimes I think this is the real benefit of the preop diet.

I know it sucks but just follow your diet. I am also on my pre op diet just finished my 4th day. I am allowed 4 Protein shakes, a lean cuisine meal under 300 calories. I am also allowed to snack on non starchy veggies. It does eventually start to get better. Good luck :)

This is just a mini-rant, but I find it so aggravating to read about patients who didn't understand -- perhaps because they were never educated by their bariatric surgical practice -- about the sole reason for the pre-op diet, which kinds of foods to avoid during the pre-op diet and WHY.

The point of the pre-op WLS diet is NOT to lose weight. It's to shrink the liver by depleting it of glycogen, thereby minimizing the risks from serious surgical complications.

This is Weight Loss Surgery, folks, not Weight Watchers.

@@findingnish ... not so much AT you -- just frustrated that patients aren't adequately educated about the reason for the pre-op diet.

I've read so many posts here by people struggling on the pre-op diet who seem not to understand that shrinking the liver is the sole reason for the pre-op diet -- and that eating high-carb foods will completely negate their other good efforts.

I know the pre-op diet is tough. It would be so much easier for patients, I think, if surgeons and their support staff did a better job of explaining all this.

Good luck to you!

I'm 10 days post op and I hated the pre op diet. I cheated a few times and my liver was fine. If u absolutely have to eat, then try a lean piece of chicken.

Try your best to do as ur surgeon instructed...it's worth it

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
