Dumping question...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

For those that have experienced dumping, have you noticed what is your limit regarding sugar, carb, fat amount in the food that makes you dump?

I know it's going to be different for each person but trying to understand this more. For example you know you will dump of you will have more than 3 g of sugar on something...

What made you dump before?

Thank you!

You will dump if you eat too much.I am on a hi Protein low carb diet. You must eliminate anything with sugar as much as possible.

Generally my dumping episodes were the result of eating too much volume of food.< /p>

Yep I understand the whole eliminating sugar thing but for example after op for the creamy Soups and stuff some have more sugar or less or more carbs and less sugar, I know some people have cream of wheat and when I checked the breakdown there was more sugar and carbs so I don't know if that works for some and not others... Weird

I have dumped 3 times in my 3 post-op months.

The first was from Tomato Soup 2 weeks out. I didn't read the label (which was especially silly since I've ALWAYS been a label reader) and ended up grabbing one with high-fructose corn Syrup as the third ingredient. Surely the crushed saltine I'd added didn't help either. Oops.

The second was from 'tasting' rice as I cooked it, trying to get the seasoning right. I didn't intend to have any with my own dinner, but I didn't want to serve it bland either. It took a few too many adjustments, resulting in more than the one or two tastes I'd intended. That was by far my worst dumping episode. I ended up sleeping on the bathroom floor because I literally did not have the strength or energy to make it directly across the hall to the guest room.

My final dump was from Pasta. Plain, salted, al dente Pasta fresh from the pot has always been a weakness, and I had a weak day. A few too many 'tastes' and here we go again.

I've never dumped from volume, and seem capable of handling reasonable amounts of fat and sugar. My issue seems to be with starches.

Yet I have no problem with pasta or rice. It really does vary from person to person :)

I don't think I have dumped yet, but I did get a really upset tummy when I ate too much chocolate bunny over easter.

Honestly, I'm glad I dump from rice and Pasta. I was a raging carb addict, and I am convinced that those were by far the worst contributors to my weight gain (especially Pasta - I think I ate it every day). If I could have selected what I dump on, those definitely would have been my choices!

Thank you for posting this CHMD! It is very helpful for me not to feel like I'm alone. I unfortunately am a little harder to learn.

My surgery was October 2015 and I've lost almost 100 lbs from dumping, constantly being sick and not eating at all. They finally found my gallbladder to be the cause of my continual sickness and took it out in March. I've been "run to the bathroom sick" free since then but still get a little nauseous at least ever other day.

I have paid attention to what seemed to make me sick though and it defiantly is sugars (I've stayed away from starches on my own) and it has definitely helped me from being sick.

My concern is that I can eat something one day and be fine but the same thing the next day will make me sick. I defiantly am not getting in enough Protein and I just don't know how to fix it. I don't have enough energy to make it through the day .... Never mind work out!

Any suggestions?

Thanks again for posting and for listening. Zasha

Lol. Isn't that the truth!!???

I have yet to dump, but I have avoided sugars completely for FEAR of dumping and quite frankly the couple times I even put a piece of rice or Pasta in my new tummy I felt so restricted it hurt. Not doing THAT again! We live, we try, we learn. That's the name of the game, especially when we progress to a "general" diet.

I've found, oddly enough, that several times since surgery, I've come upon a restriction that won't allow me to even eat mushy foods. I was completely freaked by it and my surgeon had me back off foods for a couple days, revert to liquids, and it cleared up. Happened again the other day, followed his instructions and it again abated.

Use your body and its response as your guide. You really don't want to be eating sugars and heavy starches anyway- Devils foods I tell you!!!!

Yeah, when I eat starches I feel so blah. But it's easy for me to avoid them.

I was soooo addicted to carbs, too! Pasta, potatoes, pasta&potatoes! Everything. I never ate red meat or pasta until 2012, but when I was pregnant, I was always overeating on it all. My weight gain was from pregnancy & post-pregnancy cravings

I haven't dumped except during the soft food stages when I was ok'd to eat Bariatric vegetarian chili. It was just this side of hell. Not something you want to go looking for. I have kind of poked at that bear a few times like tasting a bite of cake(it was gross btw) and it didn't do anything to me. I've had Pasta Sauce that was over my 4g of sugar limit given to me by my NUT and still no dumping. Not all people dump so you cannot count on that safety net. You have to just go knowing that it "may" be a possibility, but don't go poking for how much you can get away with before it happens. When I recognized my behavior I made changes so I don't go testing to see what I can get away with again. It's not very beneficial in the long haul to be trying to defeat or push the limits of our surgeries.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
