Any husband and wife sleeve teams out there? Topic: Time between surgeries. Discuss! :)

Recommended Posts

OK, so my husband has jumped through all the hoops and has received approval for the sleeve. His date is May 2! Yay for him! Now, I was just submitted yesterday for a band-to-sleeve revision. I am praying I am approved too. Assuming I AM approved and the doctor's office doesn't drop any more last minute surprises at me (that's another story!), do you think our surgeries spaced out 2-3 weeks apart is a good amount of time? Will hubby feel up to taking care of me by then? Time is of the essence right now. My daughter is getting married in August and I have to buy a dress and travel out of state! I need to start losing weight ASAP lol!

I would give it at least two months in between. Your husband will still be recovering himself. Maybe there is a third party who could be helpful to you both?

Oh wow, two months would take it right up to the wedding! It has to be sooner than that. No, we don't have anybody to help us out either. This may not work out like I had plannes, lol.

I think that it's one of those "definite maybe" things. If your husband doesn't have any significant complications and recovers fairly quickly as I did, it could be workable, but there is some chance that he will not be up to helping you that soon. Run it by your surgeon and see what he thinks, and also how flexible his scheduling is - can you delay your surgery by a week or two if need be, or does cancelling your slot mean delaying by a month or two because the surgeon is booked up? Always a big concern on recovery and how soon various activities may be (re)started is the need to avoid over-taxing your abs and core - thats presents a real risk of developing an incisional hernia. Most docs impose a ten pound lifting limit for some period of time - is helping your up from a chair or bed equivalent to a ten pound lift? See what the doc thinks (it may not be as obvious as we may think - after my abdominoplasty, things like ab crunches and sit ups were big no-no's, but an ab twist was ok by virtue of how things were stitched together in there.)

In short, you may be able to plan on doing your surgeries that close together, but you should have a good plan B in place if things don't work out optimally.

Of course helping another person out of their chair is more then a ten pound lift. I could not even lift a gallon of milk until about 10 weeks out and someone has to do the grocery shopping. You need to do what you need to do to take care of yourself. Don't do this just to look slim for some event. I did this surgery home alone after I was released from the hospital. I had my house stocked with enough Protein Drinks and Clear Liquids to last me for a month. I was also stocked with solo cups so that I didn't even have to wash the dishes. You must have some friend or family member who would be there for you like my sister was for me. Otherwise you can just rely on nursing staff at the hospital (your husband can be there for moral support) but maybe not overnight because he will really need his rest. You must have some friend or neighbor who you could hitch a ride to the grocery store with who would help you into the house with your groceries a few times if you got 90% of your stuff in advance. If not you would need to hire someone to help you.

So my sister literally took me to the hospital, stayed with me in the hospital till about 9 pm each night and came back by 7am. She brought me home from the hospital. I got a quick shower and washed my hair and she jumped on a plane for home after that. If I could do it then you could do it too. I would give at least a month between your husbands surgery and your surgery that way you will see everything that you will really need before the surgery and get stocked up. Also you can start your pre-op diet a few weeks early (this will not hurt you). So you will lose quite a bit of weight before you even have the surgery (I lost 17 lbs on pre op diet for two weeks before surgery). You can do this and you can do this for yourself. You do not have to rely on your husband.

My husband and I had our surgeries exactly one week apart and we both were fine. We wanted to do everything together and I'm so glad we didn't allow too much time in between because now we're both healthy and feeling great!!

Now THAT'S what I wanted to hear, lol!! Thank you! I do understand what @focus was saying though. I had initially thought a month apart would be perfect, but IF I am approved and IF my surgery can be done sooner, I'd love that.

Me and my husband had surgery the same day (11/9/15). We had his parents stay with us for a half a week and then my mom the other half of the week. We definitely needed that extra help that first week. It has been great having surgery at the same time, because we are going through similar things at the same time and have a great support system in each other! Best of luck to you!

Wow! The same day! That's fantastic! I wish we could do do that too but we don't have anybody that could help us out. Who had a more difficult recovery, you or hubby?

My husband was a little slower to recover than me. I was able to get up and move around sooner than he was. As far as pain levels and eating, we were pretty similar.

We were also sleeved exactly one week apart. I was 4/4 and he was 4/11. It worked out perfectly! I was less mobile than he was in the first days, but I bounced back to myself a lot faster than he did. He was up and walking around sooner than me. He was even able to sleep in bed and get out of bed himself as soon as he came home. I was on the recliner for about 3 nights.

DH had his surgery June 24, and mine was July 21. A month was adequate. My recovery was tougher than his was. Two weeks is not enough time between them. We have little kids so we needed a functioning parent while the other was recoiling.

Was it the shoulder pain from the gas that kept you on the recliner? Thank you for your reply☺. I still don't have an answer from bcbs for my surgery and its making me crazy, lol.

We are older with no kids in the home. My husband is retIred and i don't work outside the home. I think 2 weeks will be ok for us.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
