About to start - couple of random questions :)

Recommended Posts

Hello all... first post here!

I'm excited, nervous, scared and hopeful.

Couple of random questions:

1. I'm single, so my folks are going to come stay to help take care of me. The problem is that having them there is stressful to me. My question is - how soon will I be able to get up/mover around/ go for walks (stairs?)/make my own food, etc.?

2. How soon after surgery can I go swimming or in the ocean?

3. Did you tell your co-workers/friends or not? I'm leaning toward not making it super public, but doesn't it come out anyway when I order a dinky little plate of nothing and then hardly eat it?

Thanks all - looking forward to being on this journey with you! :)

1) I was up and around pretty quickly. I took a nice long nap after I got home, but after that I could move around pretty well. I took pain medication for about two days. After that, I just took it to sleep for a couple of days. I was home by myself the day after the procedure without any problems. You don't really eat much the first couple of days anyway, so not alot of food prep going on. I had procedure on Thursday and went to my daughter's music contest on Saturday.

2) Don't know about this.

3) I told a few people, but not everyone. I'm not trying to hide it and it's nice to have support, but some people hear about any kind of weight loss surgery and they expect you to lose 100 pounds in 6 weeks!
Once I've lost the weight and people ask me about it, I will most likely tell them that I had lap band. Plus I know if I tell a few people, then those few people are going to tell a few more and word will spread without me having to make the rounds myself.

Good Luck!

Hey Meeshee,

Congratulations on your upcoming procedure, wishing you all the best. I am meeting with the surgeon for a consult next week, and I am super excited to start the process. Can you tell me how long it took from the initial meeting, to scheduling the surgery? I have heard anywhere from 3-6 months depending on insurance. Any information you could share about your experiences prior to scheduling the surgery would be awesome!

Thanks,

Nicole :)

Thank you both!

Nicole - I actually don't have it scheduled yet... I went to my initial introductory meeting on April 5, and since them I've been doing my follow up action items... met with Psychologist, attended a Support Meeting, watched Prep videos, etc. They told me that I will most likely not have to do a 3 or 6 months prep diet, that I can go straight to surgery, but I honestly don't know when I will have the surgery. I'm hoping for some time in May. Good luck to you! Depending on when we both get scheduled, maybe we can start a "May/June class" forum for people who start at that time :).

Hi meeshee!

1. It definitely helps to have people helping with household chores at least during Post-op day 1 through 3, and you'll definitely need a driver to take you home POD 0 (day of surgery). Once the anesthesia got out of my system on POD 1, it was insanely painful for me to bend down and feed my cat. So don't be stubborn like me and take the help offered!

2. You should be able to swim when both A: your incisions are fully closed and B: your surgeon clears you for exercise.

3. I did tell my friends and coworkers. Initially a few were saying "you don't need the surgery" but soon they joined the rest and all were supportive. Who you want to confide in is your call, but last night I had an amazing time eating dinner with friends. They understood my situation & suggested a restaurant that had a great Soup selection (I'm currently in full liquid stage) and were also checking in on me that I didn't overeat and become sick. 80% of my Soup ended up in the To Go container and the only person surprised was the waitress! ????

It is very exciting and all of those other emotions rolled into one. Best of luck!

Hey Meeshee!! We may just be having the surgery at the same time. I met with the surgeon today. I have to see the nutritionist next week, then the physiological appt and then a scope test. I don't think I will have to have a supervised nutrition plan. In getting excited!

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
