What do you take? Soreness without Advil

Recommended Posts

Can't take advil or other NSAIDs, so what do you take for the soreness?

I just started lifting weights (trying to get buff LOL). I am very sore from lifting, but don't know what I can take to relieve the soreness. Looking for suggestions.

Did you have bypass? If you had the sleeve and you're a few months out from surgery NSAID's aren't contraindicated anymore. I take Advil fairly regularly, and Excedrin- both work fine and I've had no issues. Ulcers are more of a concern with bypass than with the sleeve. Most doctors no longer tell you to not take NSAIDs after you have healed from the surgery.

Don't just trust me, google it, lol.

I meant to put that I had the sleeve. Thanks for replying inner and Ava.

Ava, I'm going to check that out and talk with doctor. That would be great to get the NSAIDs back.

With bypass, can't ever take Advil again due to causing ulcers. I miss it when I overdo -- but have not had any for 11 months... and Tylenol seems to have no effect on me, I don't even notice it.

I have sleeve and my Doc forbids NSAIDs for life still. It is a problem for me because tylonol does absolutely nothing for me. I just try to stretch as much as possible after working out and I get regular massages to try and keep my muscles from getting so tight.

Someone suggested to me to stretch and use a foam roller. That foam roller did wonders for the soreness.

I will say this --- I think the Advil ban helped me understand that I was using Advil too much -- and that many of the aches and pains were related to being so overweight.

I don't take any NSAIDs, mainly because I am trying to reduce my use of all medications. To help with soreness associated with weightlifting I drink Water while lifting weights, stretch after warming up, stretch after lifting, spend a few minutes in the steam room, eat some Protein afterwards, and rest the next day.

I have been pretty successful with this approach and have only had one major case of muscle soreness since my surgery. I made the mistake of lifting weights and then working out on the rower for 20 minutes. Ouch!!

it's not Tylenol, but I love Tiger Balm, it's a rub like Ben Gay...it really helps relieve those achy muscles, headaches, etc. It smells pretty strong, but so worth it. You can find it at CVS, Walgreen's, Walmart, etc.

Oh, and Epsom salt baths...especially the eucalyptus spearmint scent works wonders as well.

epsom salts bath, cinnamon, turmeric. :-) Tylenol.

I was expecting that ban for me too, but the doctor said I can have ib if needed. I am not sure if some doctors are just more strict, or if it has to do with the procedure/medical history. I still gravitate to the things I listed first.

I'm still pre-op but my husband and I use a cream called Traumeel, for sore muscles, arthritis pain, bruises, etc. It works very well and is all natural.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
