Protein Goal/Shopping List

Recommended Posts

So I really have 2 questions. Hubby and I are both getting the surgery in May. I'm looking at Protein Shakes and Protein broths ect in order to prepare to be prepared after the surgery. After we reach our protein goal ( 60-70mg) are we okay to just drink drink drink as long as we arnt hungry in the liquids phase? It seems most of these have 27mg per 6-8 oz serving, which I understand will take us a while to get down but to me that says 3.5 servings a day and then we've reached our protein goal. Of course we will be taking Vitamins etc. Im just wondering how realistic it is that that will be all we need? I think the calories are about 130 per serving, so that is about 400 calories a day, is that about what you were getting the first month post op?

My other question is what would you suggest we pick up pre op for post op. Can you suggested the best ( least protein tasting) unflavored Protein powder? Thanks in advance!

If you are like me, right after surgery it will be difficult to get in all of your Protein and fluids so you will be sipping all day. As you heal and progress through the food phases, it gets easier.

Definitely are if you can get sample packs of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury, Syntrax nectar, Quest, Isopure, etc. to see what you like. Keep in mind your tastes may change post-op. You can also sample different shakes at GNC.

Here is what got me through the clear and full liquid phases:

Premier Protein (chocolate is my favorite but I also like the vanilla and strawberry)

ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates (various flavors)

ProtiDiet creamy chicken and Tomato basil Soups

Unjury plain and chicken Soup

ProtiDiet hot chocolate

WonderSlim dark chocolate pudding

PB2

Syntrax Nectar (fuzzy navel is my favorite)

GNC Lean shake 25 (orange cream is my favorite)

Crystal light

Mio drops

Mint and other herb "tea"

Decaf hot tea

I am currently 6 wks post op and I only take in about 500-550 calories a day so yes 400 is actually correct especially the first couple of weeks when you are only drinking limited amounts. At first I was only able to drink 1 oz at a time, then I was up to 2 oz by day 3. Right now I can drink 4 oz of my Protein shake. My NUT says to take a sip and than place the cup down for a bit because you still need to take 15-20 min to "eat" your "meal" even if it's just drinking liquid.

I use the yogurt to take my meds with. I was originally using Motts organic applesauce but it didn't hide the flavor of my crushed pills.

Here is what I ate based on NUT recommendation:

Bariatric Advantage Protein Shake - Fave flavors: chocolate & Orange Cream

Jello sugar free Jello or pudding

Dannon Light & Fit - No fruit on the bottom. The regular version is thinner than the greek version.

unjury non flavored Protein Powder

Crystal Light

Premier Protein drinks. costco is cheapest. I like Choc and vanilla. Drink them cold or heated.

I use GENEPRO unflavored powfered Protein still. I mix it into Soups, SF pudding, eggs, drinks etc. I get it on Amazon. Since a serving is one Tablespoon it lasts a long time. I drank cranberry juice the first week post op.

Once I was on soft foods, I would make pudding and add unflavored Protein powder. I used Unjury. I definitely recommend getting sample packs or protein powder to see what you like.

I didn't like any shakes. I drank Coco Libre coconut Water with protein...chocolate and vanilla, (20g). Fairlife milk jugs (19g). And Unjury chicken Soup. Those were lifesavers.

I also liked BariatricPal Cream of Broccoli. I found it a relief to have something that wasn't sweet tasting like everything else I had to "eat".

Just bear in mind that what you try, and love preop may not agree with you postop. I'm still throwing up Protein Shakes postop.

I'm having trouble getting the Protein Drinks down. My tastes has completely changed and I wasn't expecting that. Even looking at the packages makes me sick. I don't recommend New Whey. It's all sickly sweet and tastes the same to me. Can you taste unflavored powdered?

I use GENEPRO unflavored Protein powder from Anazon. No flavor at all. It is a very fine powder and usually dissolves well. I put in lots of things. Last night I had SF pudding made with nonfat milk and added the powder to the already set pudding. It didn't blend in all the way but the lumps were just chocolatey bumps like old fashioned cooked pudding could get. No biggie. I use it in my bottled Water with Mio drops.

Soup, mashed veggies, spaghetti sauce. I whip it into my raw egg for an omelet. 30g Protein 98 cal a one tablespoon serving. My saving grace for getting my Protein numbers up.

Best Wishes!

GENEPRO seems pretty popluar too it is unflavored Protein powder that mixes well. Lots of folks put it in their crystal light drinks in the morning. You get if from Amazon, I haven't tried it yet but it is on it's way to me now.

Hate Protein Shakes. Fairlife milk jugs (19g). Unjury chicken Soup and coco libre coconut Water with Protein in chocolate and vanilla. Yummy. Trust me. Not thick. Didn't have to choke it down.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
