I just had my surgery March 22nd. I didn't have any nausea, they provided me with a pill I took the night before surgery to help with it and gave me meds in hospital if I needed them. I have been lucky enough to not have any issues with pain or nausea. The only discomfort I felt so far is the bruising around the incision sites and the bloating but the more you walk the better the pressure feels so I was walking laps in the hospital as soon as I could get out of bed. I was sleeved on 3/22. I'm still in the hospital, but I haven't had much pain. It is really just discomfort and soreness. I was up in my chair a few hours out and I was walking that evening. sleeping is uncomfortable, but I'm a side sleeper and i still have a drain. Good luck!

Hi,OK ill give you some info.right out of surgery I was drugged up on morphine. Thirsty as hell couldn't drink anything for 6 hrs then I got ice cubes lol,once I finally realized what was going on it felt like I'd been kicked in the stomach. I hit the morphine button every 10 min to take care of the pain.I haven't puked yet and I'm out three weeks.I felt so good when they discharged me that I could have skipped to my car.then 2hrs after I got home I crashed hard.I got my first migraine headache of my life couldn't drink anything got dehydrated and had to get admitted back into hospital. Long story short the couple days of pain is totally worth it.I've slammed hand in a car door before and it hurt twice as bad as the entire sleeve process.

Hi Breezy,

I was not nauseous. I did not puke. I was very tired and slept a lot during the first week, and took pain killers (liquid lortab) for about the first three days, then only took them at night for another three days. The only pain that was really bothering me was at my drain site, that hurt a lot but only when I had to turn from side to side, stand up, sit down, bend over, things like that.

I went home two days after surgery (standard for my surgeon). My friend dropped me at home and I didn't see anyone else for another week. I was fine on my own, looking after my two cats and my large dog, who enjoyed all the extra walks!

I walked frequently, at least 3x per day, but they were short walks. I kept track of all the liquids, carbs, calories and protein I was taking in via MFP. I successfully got in all my liquids (64 oz) and protein (60 grams) starting the day of surgery and every day thereafter. I spent a lot of time reading and watching tv when I wasn't napping.

So, basically, lots of tiredness and napping, not much pain. No nausea or anything like that. I stayed off the scale completely until my 1 month follow up appointment so I never stressed about how much I was losing or whether I was having a stall. Everything was good. Good luck to you!

I am two weeks postop today. My case is not typical. Here's how it went:

Day 0 (day of surgery): Handled Protein drink & Clear Liquids just fine. No gas pain. Main incisional pain was at largest incision where they removed the stomach. Hardest is getting in and out of bed.

Day 1: Handled Full liquid diet but everything on it was icky sweet, eew. Tolerated oral pain medication which was VILE (liquid). Discharged and got home about 4PM. Fell down two steps in a completely unrelated boneheaded move and hit a concrete floor chest-first. Ouch.

Day 2: Everything comes back up. It doesn't even seem to be getting as far as my stomach, I drink, I belch, everything I sipped comes up with the belch. Called surgeon, off to ER per the covering surgeon this is Saturday, BTW). Admitted when CT scan shows my hiatal hernia repair site is so swollen my esophagus is essentially shut. Readmitted to hospital. Crap. Happy to get IV pain meds, though, because ribs hurt in addition to incision.

Vomiting is different than ever before, much easier, if that makes sense..

Day 3: In hospital. (Sunday). Tried for three meals to get/keep anything down. Total fail.

Day 4-6 surgeon is back from the weekend, says she wants to keep me in and on IV fluids a couple days and start cautiously getting me back to trying to swallow.

Day 7, discharged home. I've had to go back to clear liquids, my sleeve hates my Protein shakes. Just trying some plain nonfat milk in the late afternoon. Postop pain is gone, my ribs still hurt. Never have had any gas pain.

The week after the op was, for me at least, a...

Ummmmmm...

Breeze!!

I had the following -

NO pain...

NO gas...

NO infection...

NO trouble in the poo department...

NO trouble with food/water/vomiting etc...

NO trouble getting up and round...

The only real issue I had was over-hydration...

I was drinking plenty of Water AND was still on the drip...

So I was up and down peeing all the rime...

Apart from that - smooth sailing!!!

As stated in other posts, I was a BIIIIG dude...

550lbs+...

So if someone was gonna have complications and a rough time, it was gonna be me..

Hopefully you'll whiz thru it like I did...

Just trust your team and do as they say...

You'll be sweet as in no time...

Not going to lie. The first week post-ip sucks a lot! But in the grand scheme of things, it is so worth it. The misery is only temporary and you will survive. I didn't throw up, but I did have two bouts of dry heaving the second day. I had gas pain for about 4 days. My incisions didn't hurt, but I had terrible menstrual-type cramps until my drain was removed the 3rd day. I also had issues drinking Water for the first two weeks or so until the swelling went down. Even the tiniest sip caused a whole chain reaction of constriction and spasms in my esophagus, followed by gurgling in the back of my throat, then usually followed by burping. Oh, and I was super emotional and tired all the time.

On the bright side, every day it got easier and easier and once I was able to eat soft foods, I was pretty much back to feeling human again, if not "normal".

Once you get discharged from the hospital it just feels like a mack truck ran over you (tired) in the hospital they medicate you every 4 hours so once you go home u will notice every 45 minutes you are urinating , its from all them ivs !! Take the pain meds if u need them ! The Protein shakes might not taste as good as they were before, drinking Water might be hard at first but keep on trying anyway I switch brands for my protein shakes , I bought the polland spring bottles with the blue sprout on them to squeeze the water in my mouth and crystal light has been my savior! sugar free Jello and sugar free ice pops helped so much ! Just take it slow and remember everyone story might be different especially if you are a person use to taking care of everyone else , now you need to rest and let them take care of you!! Hope its help!!!

Oh make sure you have a laxative to take once you come home you need to do this before your one week appointment to see the doctor

Thank you for the responses and tips! I'm trying not to think about it too much. The two major surgeries I've had were c-sections and having a new baby sort of takes your mind off all the yucky surgery stuff. This time I won't have any instantaneous reward like that! Haha. I know it will be worth it. I have 120 lbs to lose.

Little pain, besides the gas pain in my shoulder and my hip. That was just an ache, it was annoying because nothing helps with it, you just have to deal with it.

No nausea once I was out the hospital and off morphine. The morphine was the worst thing about the whole thing really, cause more pain that it solved, which was none.

I felt good once I stopped taking the pain meds. I felt good on day 3. I drove, ran errands. I felt so good I kind of over did it.

I had a lot of energy but it didn't last long, I took naps every day. I work from home so I worked and napped as needed. I live alone so even though my friend came home with me from the hospital, they left early on the 2nd day, so I was alone and easily able to care for myself.

My recovery was a breeze. If I had it to do all over again, I would have never taken any of the narcotics offered to me. I have a high pain tolerance and they do nothing for me.

If you aren't on narcotics, you shouldn't need laxatives. You are on an all liquid diet, liquids in, liquids out.
