900 calorie diet several weeks before surgery

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else think this is a bit much? I started a 900 calorie diet monday and have already lost 14lbs.

My surgery keeps being moved due to having sinus and ear infections. I'm just waiting for the call for a date.

I figure I'd start a pre op pre op diet. If that makes sense. I've seen ppl on my 600 pound life start a 900 calories a day diet before being approved. .I'm kind of scared to gain weight before they call me for a date. I Track all my food and Water intake on my fitness pal. Has anyone else done this ?

You should be doing whatever your surgeon is requiring of you.

He didn't require anything but losing some weight before surgery would help. He didn't tell me how many calories I should be consuming or anything. . He seemed to be in a rush.. I get enough Protein throughout the day.. I have alot t lose. I'm 400+ lbs. So I want to lose some weight before going into the surgery

I have heard/read that it;s not safe to go below 1000 calories a day for women and 1200 calories a day for men without medical supervision. Obviously you'll be closer to only 400 or 500 a day on the pre-op liquid diet and the liquid phases post-op, but that will be under medical supervision.

If you are having infections, your body needs extra nutrition to recover. While you are recovering, 900 calories for a 400+ lb person is VERY low. I'd suggest something more like 1200 calories, emphasis on lean Protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs.

My surgery is three weeks from yesterday. I'm easing my way into liquids for the preop 10 days by doing Protein shakes for Breakfast and lunch, Protein + veggies for dinner, and low-carb Snacks if I'm hungry. I'm gradually backing off on carbs to avoid the two-three day headach-y period that comes from doing that all at once.

There's a balance to be struck by giving your body enough calories and nutrition to be healthy while trying to lose some weight preop.

My surgeon didn't give a calorie limit for his pre-op diet. It was basically Atkin's Phase One (no starches, carbs). He specifically told us not to limit calories too much because we need to go into surgery as healthy as possible.

I agree with @2goldengirl. 900 calories a day is not giving your body enough nutrients. It's going to make getting rid of your ear and sinus infections really hard. You may be sabotaging your surgery date because your body can't fight off the infections.

My infection is already gone.. it's what delayed the surgery.. I had to take blood work..ekg and xrays the other day and everything was good.. I'm. Just waiting fr the date and may have to wait until end of march to beginning of April for the surgery because of other ppl ahead of me on the list.. I just don't want to gain.. I started off with 1200 calorie diet and it worked.. I just wanted to lose extra weight before the surgery and to be ready fr the liquid diet. .

Thanks everyone for the replies ????

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
