Post Surgery Foods You Can't Tolerate But Wish You Could

Recommended Posts

I have a huge binder that goes step by tedious step outlining my programs rules and foods after surgery. I want to be totally compliant, and it mentions eggs, fish, and vegetables at certain timeframes "IF" you can tolerate them. My program wants the individual to be on food only-no shakes-by around the 3 or 4th month.

I always cringe when I hear this. I am so glad my program allows me to continue with Protein shakes! Even at over two years out if I didn't supplement Protein with shakes and powders and bars I wouldn't be able to get in all my protein

Same here, I would not even come close because my shake/milk have 33 of my 60 grams!

I'm still on a pretty heavy Protein kick. I "front load" a lot of my Protein early in the day with Greek yogurt (and a scoop of high quality protein) and either a Protein shake or Quest Protein Bar. I haven't found a ready made Protein Shake I can tolerate, so I mix my own with unsweetened almond milk.

The one food group I'm enjoying more of is fresh fruit, but it has to be cold and I keep the portion size very reasonable.

I'm 2 1/2 months out but so far I cannot tolerate chicken in any form, pork in any form, only beef I can handle is a fattier tender cut like ribeye or tenderloin. I can't tolerate bacon, or Protein Bars, lunch meats, Beans, rice, bread or crackers, um pretty much all I can tolerate these days are fish, shrimp(which I just became able to eat this week), eggs, salad as long as the lettuce is tender, and cheese. I jokingly say I've become a lacto pescitarian since all I eat is cheese and fish. ????

I'm Hispanic so not being able to eat breakfast/fajita/anythingyoucanimagine tacos makes me frown. Flour tortillas are a definite no. Corn tortillas are iffy with me. Any kind of bread really, but considering those things are considered high in carbs, it's probably for the best. I can eat a taco salad at least with taco meat, lettuce, tomatoes, etc.

I haven't really encountered much else that I for sure can't tolerate. Fruits have been good to me (apples, grapes, watermelon, grapefruit). Most veggies that I like (which aren't many) have been good; love making my own salads and sometimes getting a chopped salad at Subway that I can make 2-3 meals from.

I've been able to tolerate all meats as well plus any fish/shrimp; just have to be careful on the bite sizes and chewing well. I had a couple of boned-in baked chicken wings 2-3 months post-op, and that was not a good experience. I'm 5 months out now, but I haven't tried doing that again at all.

@@DangerMouse007, isn't it funny how after you have a bad experience you really don't want to try it again? I have been told many, many times that I need to continue trying meat, but I am scared to death because vomiting is not really my idea of a good time :-) But, someday I will try again!

pizza. Was a favorite go-to pre-op, cannot tolerate it post-op. Same thing with Pot roast. I'm fine with that, 4.5 months post and down 75 lbs. fine with it!

Me, too, with pot roast. But rare steak is okay. I only had a few bites, but it was more than what I could stomach of pot roast.

Oops...wrong thread...but to add to this one, I had a strange thing happen today. I had a catered lunch today with a side salad of just lettuce and spinach leaves. Something must have gotten stuck because I was throwing it all up about 15 minutes later. Not very happy about that!

At six months out I can finally handle chicken and turkey breast. But I cut it up into very small pieces and heat it in a small pan with some Water. That moistens it up nicely for me. Can't stand fish any more. None of it. Just looking at it makes me queasy. I don't try beef except for taco meat my cousin made that I ate with shredded iceberg lettuce at Christmas. I only had about a tablespoon and then just pushed it around my plate like I was eating. I was really afraid of getting sick at that celebration. The only thing I have thrown up was pickle. I know, very bad idea but I was craving it so bad and I shaved it into tiny pieces but it came right up. I was able to eat Protein bars early on but now when I try a bite I have to spit it out. Thank goodness I do well with Protein Drinks.

I'm about 7 weeks out. I tried tuna and put in low fat mayo, small amt of dill pickle relish and tiny chopped onions. Threw it right up and even saw small amounts of blood. I'm sure the mayo and pickles hate me right now...

I also can't drink Protein shakes. Not premade or a high quality powder. Tried $300 worth of different ones. HATE THEM ALL. can't even swallow them. It's too bad I hate yogurt and fresh fish too. Ugh. I'm a mess

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
