Kinda scared..problems with sleeve

Recommended Posts

Who said anything about dying? This is what makes me think there may be an issue with listening skills or comprehension.

You keep saying "they" but it's not clear who "they" is. I doubt very much that your Bariatric surgeon told you to avoid Protein supplements, and if so, you need to seek a second opinion. You are not physically capable of getting your minimum Protein requirements on food alone with a sleeved stomach.

If you got this advice from another doctor, you need to realize that no doctor, no matter how skilled, is trained in bariatrics unless they were trained in bariatrics. Bariatric patients have special dietary and nutritional requirements that non-specialist doctors likely will have no familiarity with.

And vegetarians do get protein. That's a pretty well-known misconception. Are you getting any nutritional guidance? Where did you have your surgery?

Ok so first of all "psychprof" No one has an issue with comprehension and yes I do take that as an insult. I believe that I am aka, HUMAN and like other people jump to conclusions when I hear certain things a certain way, my mind jumps to "Okay so, I'm going to get sick an die if I don't do it this/that way soon!" And no my surgeon did not set up my diet although he agrees as well with my nutritionist and the team that I work with in regards to my bariatric lifestyle. The nurses I work with highly advise against protein powders, so while you're trying to imply that I'm somehow full of ****..learn to becareful with your words. I'm not a liar, I exaggerate at times, or misinterpret things but I'm not going to make crap up, or do things based off another surgeons advice/rules because I for one believe in following my surgeons program, when I do things a little different its because I WANT TO. Like taking Protein powder for example, which was recommended against! And Yes I know the obvious, I get vegetarians get protein. I ment to the extent of a meat eater because for one I was a vegetarian for YRS and have veggie friends as well! To top it off even going back to meat, my family and I have never personally ate meat all that much, so once a day most of the time was enough.

Not using Protein supplements is always something I've disagreed with. Sure, I can see their point in that they don't want patients to be drinking their calories. liquids can be slider foods and staying away from slider foods is something we should all do. It's easy to down 500 calories in the form of a "healthy" smoothie.

BUT if you can get 24g Protein in just 100 calories AND 12-24 oz of Fluid in one drink then why not? That's what I get from just 1 Syntrax nectar drink. Not to mention that whey isolate is the absolute fastest, best absorbed form of protein available. Better than beef, chicken, fish, eggs, soy, or dairy.

So in the early stages when getting food down is so hard, I feel it's downright irresponsible for a medical team to discourage patients from getting proper nutrition through Liquid Protein supplements. Just MHO. And, BTW, I STILL get 1/3 -1/2 of my daily protein from shakes and bars. That leaves me free to eat fruits, veggies and grains rather than HAVE to eat protein at every single meal. 2 years and 10 pounds under goal....how is that doing it "wrong"?

As a vegetarian I struggle with supplementing. Ultimately I wanted to do this in the most effective way possible. My compromise is the Isopure clear drinks. I only drink the black tea, green tea & coconut flavors, but it's 40 grams of protein/ 160 calories. I often dilute it with my Water in order to kill 2 birds with one stone. I can then eat a normal vegetarian diet and met all my nutritional needs.

Going back to your first post. I wonder if you need to adjust your expectations a bit. May of us quickly hit our Protein & Fluid goals. However for some it's more of a build up. I've seen many newly sleeved people end up in the ER with dehydration. Yes Protein is important for healing as well as safe & effective weight loss, but if you are struggling, aim for that Fluid first. Then as soon as you can start focusing on getting in that protein.

Omg... I'm in the middle of getting ready for surgery... My endoscopy is this Friday... Why do I feel from the above comments that it seems catty?? I just want to get a tool to help me with my voracious appetite. That's what I'm hoping surgery will do for me.

Deep breath, everyone. Everyone has a point here. And clearly, depending on what we eat, none of our poop smells like roses.

ZombieQueen , you asked the question and posed your situation, and folks freaked out with concern for you. It boils down to a hive mind consensus that you may be dehydrated, and we all think upping the Protein as you can is a win.

Be careful, be safe, be wise, and make your choices for you.

Peace... And sip, sip sip.

For the most part people are trying to be helpful. Those that have been around long enough see this scenario posted many times. You learn to take what you need from these boards and leave the rest.

Good luck.

I hope that you did not take my comment the wrong way, but I felt a bit attacked. However, I do believe you have good intentions but your wording was a bit iffy. I appreciate your input regardless.. For the most part everyone has been pretty helpful but anyone who has been on this journey for awhile, please remember a time where you may have struggled. We all know this is not an easy road..I do not want to offend anyone or do harm with my words either. I'm simply stating what is on my mind and the things going on with me on this journey. I appreciate every single response I've gotten, (believe it or not) And I've also done myself a favor and ordered the Syntrax already after looking up a few reviews because of another poster (Thanks again!) . I'm more then open to advice and input, I just want to be respected as well. I hope others can understand where I'm coming from, and I really do thank and appreciate this forum and the replies and people since I've been on this forum. I'm a work in progress and use this as a way to help ease my mind, read of others journeys and have others to relate to.

Everyones journey is going to be different. I know its hard right now, even as I'm struggling and want to regret it I don't. Yes I have my moments, but my progress is greater then my fear at this point and no matter how much I may struggle or continue to struggle. I know things will get easier with time, this is worth it. My life is worth it, and your life is worth it. We just have to keep on our way and know things are going to be ok. Whatever you do, do not let anyone including me discourage you from your journey. This is your story and your worth so much more then whatever tiny struggles come your way because like everything else they will pass. Surgery will definitely help you with your appetite! lol it may not be easy but remember it will ALWAYS be worth it. As long as you try your best, and work on what you need to work on. I'm a work in progress as I said many times, and probably will be for a looong time. But everyones journey is different and everyones experience is different. You will be ok, always do whats right for you no matter what.

This site confuses me. I tried to reply then it sends me elsewhere. I'm just so scared and alone now. But I know this decision is mine alone. For me. That's it

Are you trying to post using the app or are you on a computer?

Don't let us scare you away.

You are not alone. There are an awful lot of people on this site who are rooting for you and want to help.

As the other posters have said you really need to try to meet your Fluid and Protein goals. I know from experience it is not always easy. From reading your previous posts your journey has not gone smoothly up to this point. My journey has not been the easiest either. I think it is very important with the symptoms you have described to see your doctor sooner rather than later. At two months out I ended up in the hospital with dehydration and malnutrition due to being unable to eat or drink because of severe nausea. I know our situations are not the same but the numbers you listed for your consumption are low enough that I am concerned. I am not a doctor nor in the medical field but I truly believe you should consult one as soon as possible. I hope things improve for you soon.

I'm on my iPhone. And I'm alone. My husband is so scared for me. But I would rather die than be so obese.

There is a risk for any surgery, but the risk of dying from WLS is extremely low.

I can understand your husband's fear but I know for me the risk of me dying without surgery was pretty high.

Has your husband accompanied to any of your appointments? It may help him feel better if he actually participates and learns more about the surgery as you go through the process.

My husband has accompanied me thus far... But there has been so much outside stressors... I haven't gone to the recommended sessions yet but I will. Probably next week. I guess I just want to see the results of the endoscopy. I want the sleeve, but I'm scared they're going to see signs of acid reflux, which means I'll have to have the rue n y

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
