Surgery in February 2016. Worried.

Recommended Posts

I am getting my sleeve on February 22nd. I'm terrified to leave my 2 year old for 2 days. I'm afraid if all the extra skin I will have. But most of all I am scared that somehow I will fail. That somehow I won't lose enough weight to make any difference in my quality of life. I guess I am just so used to being this way and so used to diets eventually failing that even with this surgery I feel like I will still be fat. I want to ride a bike with my son. I want to hike and ride roller coasters with my husband. I want to walk and not be out of breath. I haven't seen many stories of people failing. But I need some reassurance. Can I have some people give me their success stories? Tell me about how you got the weight off, are keeping it off, and can finally do the things you wanted to but couldn't.

I had similar fears. I was 290 when I started, highest weight a few months earlier than that was 295. I was constantly tired, HOT all the time and out of breath at even the slightest activity. My legs rubbed together, and all my clothes felt tight. I lost some decent weight pre-surgery, because I started the process in April of 2015 and didn't have surgery until 8/17. I don't have a lot of vacation time at work, and I had to make the appointments as late in the day as possible.

Surgery was 8/17. I went home the next day. I was readmitted the next day because of some complications I had with severe nausea and retching. I was in the hospital another 3 nights, 4 days.

Fast forward to now. I've lost almost 92lbs. I am down from a TIGHT size 22W to a 14. I can cross my legs (and I do frequently!) I can "fit" into any seat. I can walk without being out of breath. I am way more active. I'm no longer hot all the time, in fact right now as I'm typing this my feet are cold!

IT WAS SO WORTH IT. Even with getting readmitted to the hospital I would do this again in a heartbeat. Was it always EASY??? No. But it was worth it.

You can do it.

I got sleeved on 12/30. I know I'm only about 2weeks in but I had and still have your same fears. I also had to leave a 2 year old while I was in the hospital. Even now it breaks my heart when she asks me to pick her up and I can't. But I know someday soon I can. I have lost over 20lbs. so far. I don't really feel any different but my husband say my belly is going down. Each day is one step closer to being my normal self again. Sure the clear liquid diet is rough and the diarrhea sucks but seeing that scale drop a little each day makes it easier. Good luck on your journey.

Dont be worried. Look at all the benefits during and after your weightloss that you will have with your 2 yr old. Huge benefits.... you will be glad you went through the process.

I'm still preop with no kids but I just wanted to say your fears are just that fears don't let them stop you from trying because that little two year old needs the best mommy he can have. I'm sure next February once you've lost all the weight you're going to look back on this post and smile it will all be ok

Its great to hear everyone talk about their experiences. Glad someone told me about this app. I'm getting surgery the day after my birthday. It's the best gift I could give myself. I can't wait for next year to see my progress.

I hope all goes well for you Licia2210. My surgery date is the day after yours 2/23/16. I have many of the same concerns that you have. My children are older (2 girls) both away at college but they are very supportive of my decision. I also have support from my husband and my mom. I know this journey will not be easy but I'm ready for my life to change. I am also glad I found this app! :-)

My anniversary is the 23rd. I'm starting to get new worries everyday lol. I'm worried about the extra skin now. Also being able to eat enough Protein. It changes all the time. I just try to remember that even with extra skin I will be healthier.

@@Licia2210 I just wanted to tell you, you're not alone. I am having surgery on Feb. 23rd...you'll be one day older than me! ???? I too have many of the same fears. After failing so many times on our own, who wouldn't. It helps for me to pray, knowing that God has me, helps to bring me peace. I will be praying for you too. ????

God Bless!

No, that doesn't make me feel better lol. That stinks! I'll be leaving my 2 year old for 3 days. My husband will come home and see him once but otherwise he will be with my mom. I'm sure he will learn something new, say a new word, or do something I haven't seen before while I am gone. I just keep reminding myself that its fine. When I am all healed up and lose some weight him and I are going to do stuff we never did before. We are going to be able to do all the fun physical stuff together that I can't now. Everything I will be going through is worth it, just for that. You will feel the same way. Imagine running along side their bike while they peddle away! I can't wait to do that now. I've been dreading it every time he mentions a big boy bike. post-261586-1454503445382_thumb.jpg

Just showing off my little guy below. I'm glad we will be so close in our new birthdays! My actual birthday is the 21st so this is my gift.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
