Smoking & the sleeve

Recommended Posts

I am obviously craving to smoke. However, I have heard horror stories and stories about people who smoke through the whole thing.

I don't want to smoke. So, please start giving me all the reasons I shouldn't so my brain will maybe quit craving it!

I had to quit several months before surgery to assist with the healing process. Doc said that smoking after surgery would give me ulcers. Take the $$$ you're saving on cigs and buy yourself some new threads.

Threads?

LOL. Old people slang for new clothes.

In my nutrition class, the number 1 and 2 reasons for strictures were not taking your ppi post op and smoking.

Okay, I was a smoker for 25 years. I quit 2 months before surgery using the vape thing. Started low nicotine, and then tapered down to none at all. Then lost interest.

It hinders healing, causes ulcers, can cause cancer, emphysema...you know the drill.

You're getting the surgery to become a healthier you. Complete the circle by no longer adding smoking into the equation. I'm honestly more proud of quitting smoking than I am of losing all my weight with the sleeve. I think quitting smoking is harder, and it's an accomplishment you can be proud of!

And yes, save money for smaller threads ;)

I wasn't even prescribed a ppi. I wonder where your nutritionist got that information. Everything I've read says strictures are caused by factors relating to how the surgery was done or how the patient responds to healing/scarring. Never read anything about acid causing one.

Not sure, Southern, but most docs, from what I read, prescribe it, acid or not, so I tend to believe her. It also makes sense if you look at the physical structures. Either way, I'm not taking chances! Lol

I had to quit 15 years ago for spinal surgery. The neurosurgeon told me my bone transplant might not take if I continued smoking. I used Patches. Man, those things gave me some crazy azz dreams if I forgot to take it off before bed.

Have you heard about Chantix? My husband took that stuff to stop smoking, and he would WAKE ME UP just to tell me some of his crazy ass dreams! I guess that's a common side effect, lol.

Scary stories about smoking?

My sister, who's been a lifelong smoker, now has COPD. She's so weak and so unable to breathe if she exerts herself at all that she can't leave her house.

She used an inhaler so much (just to be able to breathe) that she destroyed her teeth. She just had to have them all pulled and get false teeth.

She understandably suffers horribly from anxiety. That makes it even harder for her to breathe.

Her life is now a hell on earth. And it will be until she is dead.

Oh, yeah ... she doesn't smoke anymore.

Aside from all the health issues that smoking is alleged to cause (no, I'm not saying it doesn't cause cancer, but let's face it - what doesn't cause cancer these days?) what about this for a reason..

It stinks!!!

Like, really bad...

When I was smoking, I had no idea just how bad the smell was...

The smell of freshly lit cigarette is, for an ex-smoker like me, occasionally appealing, but the smell of stale cigarette smoke on anyone is just foul...

Plus, you're gonna be eating MUCH less food...

So I'm guessing you actually want to TASTE the food you'll be eating...

Of course, that's all just my opinion...

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
