So I am 3 weeks out of surgery but I am so a scared to eat anything considering how it may make me feel. My question is what happens if a person doesn't try foods during the new phases.

Then you'll be drinking shakes and eating purees forever. You did a brave thing having surgery. Don't chicken out now! I'm adding new foods. Ate fish today. Ate two small crackers with a pureed bean topping yesterday. All OK on my plan. I eat new items when I don't have to go anywhere (at home for dinner) so if they bother me I'm in the comfort of my own home. So you can guess I avoid new foods during the day at work. It can be done! Luckily everything has been fine and it's been nice to eat other foods for different flavor and texture. Good luck!

You're needlessly making yourself unhappy. I suppose any number of things might happen if a person doesn't try foods at any given stage. Feel grumpy? Hungry? Postpone building confidence in the ability make good choices? Watch the trepidation mount proportionately to the delay? Feel one's teeth loosen for lack of use?

You should be following the practice's directions. They're designed to get you to the intersection of weight loss, satiety, safety and a feeling of well-being. Like any other time, if you take a taste of something that doesn't go down comfortably, stop.

How does it make you feel? Have your called your doctor? Your nutritionist?

Not eating delays your healing and your weight loss.

Take your time, if something doesn't sit well, try again a month later. Just make sure you continue to get your Protein and liquid in.

It's like we're babies trying food again for the first time.

Thanks guys I guess I'm just waiting to eat again without any discomfort of gas every single time I eat or belch. This makes me not want to try new foods. I just want to feel normal again. I haven't talked to my nut yet but I will get in contact with her. Also I don't want to chicken out I just want this to go quickly

@@lizag234 -- Is that what it's about? Gas is expected. WLS people get off easy. Are you aware of Ben Franklin's essay? The diplomat, presented to royal courts of Europe to represent the United States, had a crusty side. That's known. My point is that all we do is burp.

And, if you want to feel normal "again," you're way ahead of the game. Do you have any idea how many people never made it that far pre-surgery?

I've had the same feelings. I just moved to solid foods and I had ONE tiny chicken nugget yesterday and it made me pretty nauseous for several hours. It makes me scared to try new foods because I don't know if it will make me feel bad until I try. I just keep some zofran with me and practice my breathing exercise if I get really nauseated. It passes eventually.

Jeez. Eat something. If you burp, you burp.

Do you want to be successful or not? The only way you'll get there is by doing what you're supposed to do.

If you gotta cry, then cry.

But do it.

Or don't.

Your choice.

"Chicken nugget" as in, a little piece of baked/boiled/poached/grilled chicken? Or an actual "chicken nugget" as in, a breaded and fried piece of something that may have once belonged on a chicken? Because those are two very different things, and if it was the latter, it's not surprising that it made you nauseated.

If you have just moved to solid foods, try a small piece of chicken breast that's been cooked in one of the above mentioned methods, or in a slow-cooker, ideally with some broth or gravy to moisten it. Go slowly, and chew each bite very thoroughly before swallowing.

Are you taking a PPI? That can greatly help with the gas, but keep in mind gas is part of the process. Belching is normal. Even over a year out I belch after eating, sometimes rather loudly.

This process will not go quickly if you do not start it.

You are only 3 weeks out.

Me, too.

I personally don't see the harm in delaying the stages of progression a week or two......but that's just my untrained, unprofessional opinion.

The way I look at it is simply allowing your new stomach a little longer to heal.

Just make sure you are drinking your Protein and getting down the amounts you are supposed to.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
