Swallowing Pills

Recommended Posts

Question, I was told not to swallow my pills but crush them instead. Is there a reason for that besides not being able to physically swallow them because of the size or are there other reasons. (ex: pills going through too fast and not getting all its nutrients)

I'm 3 weeks post op but I'm able to drink and eat very well. I've only thrown up once because I ate too much and didn't realize it until it was too late. I'd like to try swallowing my pills instead of crushing because I can't stand the taste anymore. Some days I don't take my Vitamins because it's just too gross.

Anyone have any advice or useful info?

Thanks

Talk to your surgeon. Mine allowed me to take whole capsules and pills after 2 months.

Get chewable vitamins! I had a whole list from the surgery center of which meds are OK to crush or open capsules and which are not (e.g., time release, etc). I am almost 3 weeks out and am allowed to swallow my omeprozole capsule now, but not Vitamins for another couple of weeks. But you need your vitamins so do ask for chewables (I take Celebrate).

My nutritionist said that early on there is a concern that the body will not be able to properly absorb the nutrients from the larger Vitamins. I had to crush my multi and Calcium, but my small pills like the D and my omeprazole I was allowed to swallow. After my 6 week follow up I was allowed to swallow all my vitamins.

I found that the chewable vitamins caused me greater difficulties than the capsules. I went off them immediately, and I am hopefully absorbing a sufficient amount from the capsule. Everything else they gave me to take is going down fine, and the only Vitamins I am taking in chewable form are B12 and D3.

I DID liquid FOR THE FIRST FEW MONTHS EVEN THOUGH IT WAS OK'D BY MY SURGEON TO DO WHOLE pills. THE THOUGHT JUST FREAKED ME OUT A LITTLE. SO I ORDERED LIQUID. IT WAS AWFUL TOO LOL.

I hate the taste of crushed pills, so I was swallowing them whole once I was home from surgery. Just the small pills, I didn't take the large Multi-Vitamin until my first follow-up which was 3 weeks later.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
