Here's me these days! I really keep meaning to take proper full body pics, but I'm just so bad at remembering. This was at my 40th birthday party on Sat night - that's me in black/grey stripes

Went t a seminar held in Essendon (Victoria) was a little put off by the way they generalised! The psychologist basically said that all overweight peple are depressed, housebound and unsocial. I was really mad!!! I might be big but im not unsocial have plenty of friends and am certainly not housebound. Yeah sure sometimes I get depressed by the way I look but Im not to the point where I just cant live!!! I then called the surgeon and cancelled my appointment!!! The Doctor I choose had nothing to do with the seminar so i will still go with him when the time is right I need to do alot more soul searching first

Sounds like the seminar wasn't well researched!

And good on you for realising that you aren't ready. I went to my GP the other day for a check up and was talking to him about my band (he's the one who gave me the referral and I had to convince him it was for me before he would do it). I told him that I would recommend banding to anyone who had researched it and as you said "done some soul searching" and was prepared for ALL the changes it would mean in their life. Its not a magic fix. Its a big, life long change. My Dad has a band and he said to me when I was doing my research "Remember this is a life long thing, you have to live with this every day for the rest of your life". I was 26 at that time. Just over a year later I had my band done. I don't know that I would have been ready to do this 3, 4 or 5 years ago, but I was ready mentally and emotionally when I did do it. You will know when and if its the right time for you too. I think its shows a lot of strength of character to not just rush into it. We're all here to talk to if you need to ask any questions.

Im not sure what you mean by the seminar not being "well reaserched" On my part I had called the office and asked 10000 questions about the seminar. On their part No they did not do a very good job holding and reaserching the appropriate information needed for future patients. I dont care how many obese people there are in the world! I just wanted to know how the band works and how it will work for me. Thank you for the offer its nice to know that there are great people on this site that are willing to answer questions if they are silly or not! As for me I will do this eventually just not right now. I really dont feel as though im in the right state of mind as of yet. Ive recently had a baby so Im concentrating on being a mother of 2 kids under the age of 3 at the moment, keeping in mind that it will be my turn to shine in the year 2008. A new year with new challenges and new goals. So I truly thank you for being there with me through this rollar coaster of challenges I face. I will definatley be asking questions along the way. thanks

Beena, thats exactly what I meant - they didn't research and speak with post op patients to provide the information that people go to the seminars to hear about. I know at my pre op seminar, they had the surgeon who told us about the medical side of things and then his consultant there, who is a bandster, who told us about her personal experience and the experience of several other patients. Both the good and the bad. It was a really comprehensive presentation and they sent us off with a pile of pamphlets and print outs too.

This website, and specifically the Aussie people on this thread are a fantastic support and a wonderful bunch of people. No question is too silly - cos trust me we've all asked them at some time or another!

Working towards it in 2008 is a great goal to have! I wish you the very best of luck!

I'm glad you're thinking about it carefully. I jumped right in and only thought about it/researched it for around 4 weeks.

I have been banded almost 3 months but I'm quickly learning that, while my weight is going down, my 'issues' are still there and more amplified than ever. I'm really benefitting from seeing a psychologist. Sure, I can't eat much now but why do I still want to. It's been an interesting question.

Hi all, just wanted to share the NSV I had today - I bought 3 new tops today two size 12's and a medium! I didn't expect any of them to fit, and almost fell over in the change rooms when I put them on and they did - they were from Valley Girl, Supre and the "teenage" section in Target! Woo!! The last time I wore a size 12 was when I was about 12!

Hi everyone,

Well I finally did it. I was banded Tuesday afternoon and home Wednesday morning. Still alittle tender a couple of days later, but am really looking forward to the positive changes to come.

Anyone who thinks this isn't a massive step is kidding themselves, but it really feels like the right choice for me.

Wish me luck!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
