I am just starting my journey. My PCP and I just discussed it and he will be refering me to a surgeon soon. I am 280# and 5'4, I also have DJD and OA in my L knee. This seems like the best route for me. My husband will probably being having it done as well. He has sleep apnea and his BMI is like 45. Maybe we both will get done at around the same time..hehehe. So I am open to comments and suggestions. The part that has my husband worried is the "baby food" diet...LOL I told him it would all be worth it in the end and that we would get through it together. My mother had this done and has done great with a 120#+ weight loss in 1.5 yrs.clap2.gif

Niki, I think it's great that you & hubby are considering having the same procedure. In my opinion, it's important to have strong support on the home front. You can encourage each other.

Since your Mom had the procedure, I'm sure he realizes it's not true baby food! sure, the first few weeks it's liquids/mushies - but, there is not too much I can't eat. I just eat WAY less that before. And, of 'course there are those foods I avoid (rice, bread, pasta) so I won't have issues with obstruction.

Sometimes hard Proteins like beef, pork, chicken can be difficult to get used to.... I always make sure I have a food "lube" of some kind. usually a sauce, bbq/ketchup/horseradish, that keep it from getting so dry and tough.

I'm excited for you both, keep up posted on what you decide and when you get surgery scheduled!

All the best,

Karla

I think it will help greatly to go at it together. My wife and I were both banded last winter. I've lost 75 lbs and she's lost around 50. She isn't quite as motivated as I am and eats more of the junk foods. But all in all, I'm glad she's doing it. We're saving a lot of money in groceries!

Good luck!

Bruce

We will be attending a seminar on 7/31 then we will go from there. We still have the preapproval and all that fun stuff to do. I am looking so forward to it. My husband still remains a little apprehensive, but willing. I told him we would both feel 100% better and that we would do fine. I am also planning on joining Curves as well, but if my hubby wants to go work out then we have a local small gym that is "fat" friendly LOL.

I will keep you posted! GL to you Joann on your upcoming surgery!!!

thanks. It's probably a good thing he's a bit apprehensive, he'll keep the level headed approach and you can have the excited approach.

Definitely, exercise and chewing A LOT will be essential :-0

my husband and i went to a seminar this morning to learn about the lap-band procedure... i'm really still only just thinking about it. all i know is that i want to quit being a frumpy married woman and be a hot young thing again.

reading through the posts on here about what some of you folks have to say is very helpful... and i plan to be sticking around here for a while...

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
