I am 51 and trying desperately to work my way to lap band to bypass revision....this has got to happen...50's are the new 30's in my book...but much wiser!!!

50 is coming fast for me. 7 more months. I was a lap band steer for 4 years till major slip wouldn't go back into place. On my own for the last 3 years. Insurance change & scheduled for my bypass 2 mos from today. Yikes!

Good luck, Ladybug! It is such a disappointing setback when the band fails. Wish we could sue. You will be happy with the bypass. It is, in my opinion, so much easier to deal with than the band.

I just turned 55 in June, I had my surgery done in January of 2013, & I had lost a total of 206 lbs, I've had some big life changes & I also have chronic RA, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism & OA in my hands & knees..my knees are bone on bone & is very difficult to walk, between the stress, constant pain & lack of movement I've gained back 46lbs in a year & a half time..I'm do TERRIFIED that it's all going to come back on, I've been trying to walk some everyday, over the last 6 days I've managed a mile a day, I've cut out the junk, but one of my biggest problems is, that I sleep weird hours & never more than 3 hrs at a stretch do I eat in the middle of the night, UGH..I'm really scared. I also am 1 of those people will weigh themselves a few times a day, I know that's a big no no..if anyone has any ideas how to jump start my weight loss I'd appreciate it, thanks for listening

I hear you! Went through this terror after my lap band quit working. Of course, some of the weight did come back on because I could eat more. Things to check into: What are you on for thyroid? Synthetic hormones just don't address everything. I found a Dr. who ran the full spectrum thyroid panel that showed the Synthroid was not affecting my T3 and T4 levels. I now take natural desiccated thyroid hormone and my levels are where they should be. You can read more at Stop the Thyroid Madness.

Next, if you have insurance that will cover it, look into knee replacement. It's a huge thing, and scary, but will change your life. My left knee was bone on bone. Finally broke down and had it replaced. Changed my life. Finally, like you said, cut out the junk food and get back to the basics. Eat like you did right after surgery. Focus on grams of Protein, fluids, and Vitamins. Even being inactive (because I am, totally) you will begin dropping again. May be slow, but down is down, and that's better than up.

I don 't know everything, but I know some of what you are going through because I"ve been there on my own path. My arthritis is so much better with the Vitamin regimen and cutting out refined carbs completely. Get the good fats in (fish and olive oil---so good for arthritis). I hope some of this advice helps. These are the steps that helped me. I
hadrevision to bypass on April 18. Have dropped 50 so far. So glad I had my knee done 8 years ago.

You can get back! You have the tools. Keep us posted.

My doctor has ran a ton of tests, even ordered a MRI for my knees.

i have torn meniscus in both with osteoarthritis in them, a double whammy.

our OHIP does cover knee replacements but try and get into an orthopedic surgureons office!

I get enough Protein plus any excess is turned into carbohydrates in the body.

The warmth of the summer does help, I do get out and the weight is crawling off 1 pound at a time lol. I am now 6 months out I just saw my nutritionist and she says I'm on track. I have lost 65lbs so far. I guess I'm going to be like the tortoise-slow and steady wins the race 😁

I just turned 52 and had revision from failed lap band to bypass 4/14. I have lost and maintained 115 lb weight loss. My weight loss was slow and steady but I really feel at least for my body it was the best way as there was no dramatic adjustment to recover from. I follow the rules for Protein, no carbonated drinks and I exercise daily but not vigorously.

I just completed plastic surgery for Tummy Tuck, lower body lift and vertical thigh lift. Even after the weight loss I never really felt comfortable due to all the loose skin. I am only two weeks post op but I already feel so much more comfortable with how it turned out.

I will be 53 soon. Was banded 7 years ago and it hasn't worked for me.. I had it removed today. Considering revision to sleeve but haven't ruled out bypass. Dr prefers to do as 2 separate procedures to allow healing time. Ok with me. I am working towards requirements for insurance.

I also had the lap band for three years and had problems from the onset. I had a conversion to a gastric bypass three years ago and it was the best decision for me. My surgeon was able to remove and convert in the same procedure. I wish you much luck.

Hello all!

I am new to this application. I am in my 50s as well. I am really close to getting my bypass. ( consultation with Dr. Tuesday) if my consult goes well, they will schedule me for surgery Tuesday. It looks like they are about a month out, so it could be October.

I will be 53 in September and was sleeved August 2016. Best choice I have made.

I'm 49 and getting Gastric Bypass on 9/6.....a few days from now. Was on track for the sleeve but due to GERD, doc recommends this. Anxious and excited but mostly excited!!!

So grateful for this forum!!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
