@@rgodfrey09 - The 30g max Protein is an interesting "rule of thumb" that is more complicated than you might think. There was a study in 2006 (International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism April 2006) showing that on average the 30g at a meal go towards muscle repair, but what is neglected is that Protein can be used for energy too. So it's not wasted to ingest more than 30g. It's not going to kill your kidneys, unless you are really dehydrated. To add to the confusion, everyone is different in their rates of absorption and need. I wish I could come up with hard and fast rules but that's just intellectually dishonest. Common sense suggests you are better off spreading out your calories and protein throughout the day, but getting 50g of protein in one meal will just change where the amino acids are broken down in the digestive system, not waste it.

@@OKCPirate you are absolutely correct, but for someone who is just having the surgery and starting out dehydration is a very real issue. This is why I think the doctors want you to try and adhere to that 30g rule in the beginning because A) excess Protein that you don't burn turns into glycogen and stores as far similar to a carbohydrate and B) as you mentioned can cause liver and kidney problems without adequate Water. I know I still at 8 weeks struggle with my water goal, so if I was getting excess protein I'd need even more water. In my research, getting extra protein like that only seems worth it if you're able to get the extra water and if you're able to work out. Around surgery time, OP will not likely be doing either of those.

@@rgodfrey09 - Makes sense. Keep in mind that when you are getting Protein in the form of a shake, you are getting the necessary Water to protect the kidneys with the shake or drink.

If you start increasing exercise your Protein needs will increase. I noticed I was losing hair when I started doing heavier weight training. I realized that the protein recommendations from my NUT was way under what I needed. Google "protein calculators" for more insight.

I have mainly focused on getting in as much hydration as possible since surgery. Tummy does not tolerate Protein Drinks or yogurt very often. I was under the impression hydration was most important the first two weeks, but get in as much Protein as you can. I hope I didn't make a mistake?!?!

@@Invictus No, you didn't make a mistake. Your first two weeks are for healing and getting dehydrated would be a mistake.

Try making sugar free Jello with unflavored Protein powder. That was really helpful for me during my week of full liquids (two weeks ago) even now in the pureed stage. powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury has a recipe on their website.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
