Just found out that my blood sugar is very low does anyone have this problem? How do you manage it?

Several individuals who had RNY surgery had issues with hypoglycemia after surgery. It affected both those who had diabetes before surgery and those that did not. I don't know about sleeve patients. Usually once someone has an issue with hypoglycemia where their blood sugar get so low that they faint, then they take the appropriate steps to manage it when they feel another episode coming on. These are a few of the steps you might follow:

Take

3 or 4 glucose tablets

1 serving of glucose gel—the amount equal to 15 grams of carbohydrate
1/2 cup, or 4 ounces, of any fruit juice
1 cup, or 8 ounces, of milk
5 or 6 pieces of hard candy
1 tablespoon of sugar or honey
This condition can also be caused by those who were diabetic prior to surgery and taking diabetic medicine. And then after surgery when their blood sugar level normalized failed to reduce or eliminate their blood sugar medicine. Since your surgery date was October 2013, I suspect that is not your case.

Is this happening to you consistently? I have gone on line myself because I have had 2 episodes of my sugar getting very low. My issue does not happen consistently so I have done nothing about it at this point. I am hoping this is just a fluke.

When I went on line to better understand hypoglycemia in gastric bypass patients, it talked about the vicious circle that happens. The best way to treat it is to change your diet removing most if not all carbs. This will stop that vicious circle. I would definately see my doctor asap and then meet with the nutritionist for diet instructions.

Not to scare you but This can be a very serious issue if it goes untreated. In severe cases they have had to reverse weight loss surgery to resolve it but this is in severe cases only after they have tried everything else.

Call your doctor and good luck!

The sleeve cannot be reversed although I wish it could. I have not lost much weight at all. I had my band removed in December 2013 and sleeved March 2014 and only lost 34 pds and gained back 13 pds. Now I've learned I'm battling hypoglycemia. I worked out hard over the past few years watched my fat intake and now I'm told I'm not getting enough fat in and to stop working out. Been battling dehydration for over year. I get headaches and acid feeling from my stomach which triggers headaches. I really regret this surgery. All of them

I'm two and a half years out and and I've been battling it for the last year. I recently was traveling and didn't have a single incident in 3 weeks and I didn't do my regular 5 small meals. I think it was because I cut out almost all caffeine and I was extremely active (lots of hiking). Trying to incorporate these changes into my lifestyle and have noticed a decrease in incidents.

I will try that. My heart rate was normally in the high 50's resting, now it's near 80. Very scary...what do your 5 meals consist of? Could you give examples? These Dr's act as if they don't care....so frustrating and I MISS working out. All hard cardiovascular I was doing (cycle and high impact aerobics)

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
