Anyone diagnosed w/ "Functional Dyspepsia?"

Recommended Posts

2 1/2 years post gastric sleeve. Been having heartburn-like pain since and before surgery. Its not the normal reflux, acid coming up my throat. More like intense hunger pains. Gets worse on an empty stomach, eating makes it feel better. Not sensitive to spicy foods or any particular food in general. Bothers me all day and even wakes me up at night.

GI doc has me on very high dose prevacid - 30mg 2x/day. Tried prilosec and nexium. Doesn't seem to help, although it gets much worse if I stop. Had an endoscope which came back negative for anything, ie no ulcer or irritation.

Doctor's diagnosis is that I have "Functional Dyspepsia." Which I believe is sort of a catch all for they don't know what is wrong and possibly it is psychosomatic, ie stress or in my head...! He even went so far as to suggest that I try antidepressants....

Anyone have experience with my symptoms or diagnosis?

Thanks

The reason I chose the Sleeve is because there is supposed to be a reduction in hunger. I am hungry just about all the time. I have been researching it for a couple weeks and some people have said their Dr said its excess acid production. Or Dyspepsia. My doctor's office only help was for me to snack between meals. I asked about acid over production and they had no idea. So I am back to the web looking for answers. I have seen that some patient's doctors have them take antacids like gaviscon through the day. I will post when I find out more...

Thanks Cielle92 - I too thought that removing a big hunk of my stomach was supposed to remove a big part of the area that produces hunger hormone. I was/am gravely disappointed in that I too am as hungry as I was before surgery. The problem for us overeaters is that we are missing some gene that properly regulates the amount of food we actually need and tells us constantly that we are hungry. My surgeon said that would be fixed with this surgery. Instead, I am still always hungry and while it is good news I CAN'T eat as much as my body craves - the bad news I still feel all those cravings and feelings of being hungry. I get a "FULL" feeling, but full is a physical sensation and is different than feeling like I have satisfied my hunger. A BIG DIFFERENCE. Good luck.

Me too, I am getting better. I upped my calories to 1000 a day and that seems to help. And I'm actually losing. Was not losing at all on 800 calories.

I thought it was just me. I was hovering around 750 and I wasn't losing much. I've increased to 900 and while the weight isn't flying off as I had expected at 600-800 calories, it is coming off and I feel more satisfied.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
