does my daughter have to go off steroids before sleeve?

Recommended Posts

My daughter wants to have a gastric sleeve. She had an appointment with my dr. who performed my sleeve operation. My daughter is on steroids (very low dose, 5 mg) and the receptionist told her the dr would not perform the surgery if she was on steroids My daughter has inflammatory arthritis. She stopped taking the heavy arthritis drugs (biologics) because she thought she would have to go off of those, but she has continued to take the steroids to be able to function at her job (she is a physical therapist) So I am wondering if this is correct. She was so disappointed she cancelled her appointment because she didn't see any need to drive to Dallas if he wouldn't do the surgery. Has anyone out there had the sleeve on steroids? Is it a factor in the healing process? Thanks for any info you can give me. I am hoping the receptionist was wrong. She told my daughter to go back on the other drugs and get off steroids I cant believe that would be correct Those biologics are scary stuff.

I know steroids can be a problem for healing. I would speak to the surgeon about specifics and get his/her input. She may have to go off for a short period of time. Don't panic just yet and speak directly to the surgeon with any concerns you have. Good luck!

Definitely speak with the surgeon, don't take instructions/information on this kind of issue from the receptionist. There may also be alternate pain-relief possibilities that the surgeon could discuss with your daughter. Good luck!

As others advised definitely consult with the surgeon but my surgeon said not steroids two weeks prior and a few weeks after (don't remember the exact amount of time after since I don't take them).

But my surgeon pretty much removed all medications and pain reliever two weeks out.

She needs to talk with her surgeon about her specific needs and issues. My surgeon said that steroids were the biggest cause of leaks.

I agree pls talk to dr this can be true for some ppl usually ppl that have underlying issues such as lung disease which my husband has and takes steroids for if your daughter is otherwise healthy she may be accepted to surgery with a lung function test first the steroids do inhibit healing however is more impacted by bacteria if she isn't having a bypass they may do it always ask the dr first before discontinuing meds it takes so much time to adjust to diff meds etc

I am awaiting insurance approval and I take prednisone and will for life. I take 10mg every other day for a high EOS. None of my doctors have commented at all about it even the surgeon. I guess I'll know for sure when my surgery appointment is set.

Thanks everyone. I plan to contact the dr again and check it out. It does sound like there is a greater risk of leaks and slower healing, so we need to check it out carefully. Appreciate everyones responses

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
