It's going down tomorrow

Recommended Posts

I'm getting sleeved tomorrow! Its pretty crazy to me. For the past couple of weeks I have avoided thinking too much about it because I didn't want to freak myself out. And now that it's here, I'm thinking about it.... and freaking myself out.

I have a friend that's going with me. My best friend had it done a few months ago and she's the only thing that is keeping me sane right now. I fly out to Tijuana in the morning. Leaving Oklahoma at 6:30 am. (I should be asleep but I'm online talking to you guys). Surgery is tomorrow afternoon sometime. I would like to take a Xanax tomorrow but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. Any helpful advice is appreciated. Thanks

Thanks everyone. I'm using Dr. Jorge Maytorena with LTVSG. Apparently they are running a special for $2999 all inclusive. This also worries me. You know the saying, 'you get what you pay for' ? Well this has me freaked out a little. I have done all kinds of Google searches and searches on BariatricPal and haven't found anything negative on him so that's a good sign. I've also messaged a few people I found on here that has used him and they had good experiences. I should prob just chill out and not worry myself over nothing.

Good luck to you mate...
As I've stated on other posts, just do everything the doc/surgeon.nutritionist tells you and you'll be sweet...

Congratulations and take care...

Everything went great. Yesterday was rough but that was because of the gas they inflate you with to maneuver around your stomach. I only saw my surgeon for a total or 2 minutes. Although I was surprised with how many doctors I saw throughout the whole process. I met with a cardiologist, anesthesiologist, the surgeon (Dr. M) and then a couple others the following day.

The facility where I had the procedure (J.L. Prado) was small but very clean. The recovery house they moved us to the next day was immaculate. Very, very clean and excellent care. I was very impressed. The toughest part of the whole thing was dealing with the gas. sleep was uncomfortable the second night but they gave me a lot of pain meds to help with it.

I would recommend LTVSG to anyone thinking about getting sleeved. Even the shuttle lady, Annette, was awesome. My entire experience was way better than what I had imagined.

What are the medications including the pain pills they prescribed? They mentioned that most of them were Mexican and I'm very curious. Did you have any problems getting picked up from airport? We're they holding a sign or? Going to same Doctor August 15th. How long did EKG and bloodwork take? Did they cath you before while you were awake? Hope you are resting. When you feel better Id love to hear all the details. Cheers

I'll have to take a picture of them and post because they are all in Spanish and I couldn't begin to tell you what they are. I know I have stuff for nausea, a pain killer, an antibiotic, heartburn, an antiseptic spray for the incision wounds, and blood thinners if you're flying. The blood thinners are an additional $50 that's not included in the $100 they tell you in the info sheet.

We flew in Tuesday morning and arrived at 9:30am. I text Annette at my connecting flight and told her and she was there waiting on us. She was in her charcoal GMC Arcadia with a sign on the dash. She took us straight to the facility which took about 30 min. They gave us paperwork to sign and we slipped into our gowns and chilled out for a couple hours and waited on the doctors to get there.

I saw the cardiologist first and he did some checks to make sure our blood flow was normal. Later the anesthesiologist came in introduced himself and explained what was going to happen. Then Dr. M came in for a brief minute to say hello. He didn't say much.

My friend went first and then I went about 3 hours after her. The actual surgery was prob 1.5-2 hours and then they clean up for the next patient. No cath. It's unnecessary. Plus you don't have anything in your system anyway.

Couple things they don't tell you that will help is liquids only a day or two before. I took a laxative on Sunday to get everything out. And then absolutely nothing to eat or drink the day of the surgery.

I was shaking when I came out of the anesthesia. You'll be in pain from all the gas. You HAVE to walk as soon as possible to get that out. I was up walking around still half drunk from the pain meds trying to get the gas out maybe an hour after I got back to my bed. They were supposed to keep us up walking most of the night but they didn't. That prob caused some unnecessary pain the next day. So be sure to get up and walk about every 2 hours. Sipping Water also helped burp up the gas. Take some Gas-X strips with you. You'll be glad you did.

The next morning Annette took us to the recovery house and we both had private rooms with hospital beds and directTV. They gave us a button to push if we needed assistance. We had IVs hooked up to us the whole time. From before the surgery to the hour we left. Martha was one of the nurses/care givers and she was awesome. My favorite person there. She's a sweet heart. Doesn't speak much English but she understood most of what I was saying.

Annette picked up our meds so we didn't even have to go to the pharmacy. She took us back to the airport around 11am on Thursday.

Everything was very accommodating. The whole experience was great. I was very skeptical going into all of this. Hope this helps you.

Great write up, glad everything worked out well. I did mention the walk alot and drink alot, figured it had not changed.. BAsed on this, I'll definately consider Mexico when I get my plastics done ( I can already see I will need them).

Now the hard part starts, keep drinking as much as you can and DO NOT push past your schedule for food types. You will pay for it and your primary care giver is not near by so dont take any chances. If you have blood in teh stool, if its black, keep an eye on it but it should clear. If its red, get to the hospital.. TMI, but you need to know these things..

Luck,

Craig

Thanks for the awesome write up. That answer a lot of my questions. I'd love to see the pill bottles so I can figure out the medications. My stupid fear now is pain, so I hope the meds they give you help. I'll definitely walk around as much as possible. How are you feeling today? How tall are you? It seems like your weight is very similar to mine 260/5'10.

Cheers!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
