No Birth Control 30 days prior to surgery? What? Why?

Recommended Posts

I just read through my pre surgery packet and it says to stop birth control 30 days before surgery. I still have not as I really don't want to miss out on my surgery because I will get pregnant. Does anyone else have this restriction and does anyone know Why there is such a restriction? i am on a really mild bcp already called micronor.

Typically it is because birth-control pills greatly increase your risk of developing clots post surgery. By staying on them you are putting yourself at a very high risk. I would definitely follow your surgeons advice and use a different method prior to surgery.

i also had that restriction and that is exactly what my surgeon said, it increases blod clot risk a lot! and i know with my surgery my hormones went wacky anyway!

good luck with your surgery!

Everyone else is right- it's because there is concern for clots. That being said, people have surgery every day who are on birth control so the risk is pretty slim. Also, not all forms of birth control carry the risk. I'm on depo, so since it is not an oral contraceptive, it is not contraindicated for the surgery. If you're worried about getting pregnant, maybe try one of the forms of birth control (ring, shot, patch, etc) that isn't an oral contraceptive and then you're both protecting against babies but also not increasing your risk for clot.

Thank you. I have a call in to my Dr with the exact type of bcp I am on and hope he will say ok to continue, but if not I will follow his instructions. He has no deaths for a reason.

I was told no birth control pills after surgery either. Your hormones are too out of whack and the pill doesn't work well. I was advised to get an IUD instead.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
