Anyone approved with a BMI under 40?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have Cigna insurance, and my last weight loss appointment is next week. I have a BMI of 36.5. Cormorbidities of hyperlipemia, high cholesterol, and a degenerating hip. My primary care doc is actually the one who first suggested the sleeve to control my weight because of my hip. My mom is diabetic, and I am pre-diabetic.

I'm really worried that I've junped through all these hoops and insurance will say no because my BMI isn't 40. Can anyone give me some encouragement?

My BMI was 35+. Unfortuantely Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana for state employees will not pay for any weight loss surgeries regardless of medical need so I'm having to self pay. I have osteonecrosis in several joints -- have already had 2 total hip replacements when I was 48 and 48. Having the surgery to try to save my joints and hip replacements. Also have problems with heart, blood pressure, high cholesterol and elevated liver enzymes. Hope your insurance comes through for you. I'm completely disgusted with my insurance. But, having the surgery in two days. Good luck!

I'm in Australia and its a little different here. I attended one appointment in September 2014, had a BMI of 30.4 and was booked in for VSG surgery one month later. I did not have any other medical issues of note. I've not had any problems with my recovery and have lost 20 kilograms so far. I now have a BMI of 23.6. I feel extremely lucky especially when I read all of the issues and costs (hoops you have to jump through in America). I wish you all luck with your surgeries wherever you are in the world. x

Yesterday, Cigna said they had the information from my doctor and I was under review. Today they say they've never received anything. SO FRUSTRATING! So I left a message with my surgeon's office. (The insurance gal never answers her phone. Also frustrating). I know I'm not their only patient, but it has now been a week since my doc sent everything to my surgeon.

Midemali, crazy question. How much in pounds do you weigh? Sounds like you are doing awesome by your bmi. You were very lucky living there and not having to wait the times we have to in the U.S. my insurance is like most here, 6 months. Very frustrating for sure. My mother got hers done immediately too due to a life threatening reason. Almost unheard of here. But the reason for her gastric bypass(hers) was a need for extra skin on her stomach because of an extremely large hernia. She had to go to another state too to have done because of her situation too. With her not going through the classes and nutritionist, she was very unaware of a lot. She was malnourished, and sick almost every meal due to not understanding the guidelines. But honestly, 3 months in most cases are all that should be the wait. That is plenty of time to learn the exercises, new ways of eating and drinking and all the other things involved.

The surgeon's office finally called back on Wednesday. (A week since my primary care doc submitted the last items to them). Surgeon's office said they never received doc's notes from the April and May visits. Grrr...that's why I called and asked if they had everything! I called Cigna today, and they still haven't received anything from my surgeon.

I know in the scheme of things, this is not important, but it sure is frustrating. I hear how quickly everyone's offices are getting approvals, and I'm a little jealous! Even after I get approval, I can't schedule surgery myself. We have a secondary insurance called Surgery Plus that has to do that, so I'm sure that will be another hoop to jump through.

I'm so sure you are frustrated. It's frustrating enough just getting to the point your at. Seems like the office help is a little laxed in their movement. Thoughts with you to get a date soon

Thank you. My mom is okay, but she's been having a hard time managing her diabetes. She also had an emergency appendectomy last night, so maybe that was part of her recent blood sugar issues? Blood sugar is affected by all sorts of stuff!

My insurance finally confirmed they received the pre-auth information from my surgeon TODAY! So now they have 5 business days to review. I certainly hope I'm approved- it feels like the process is draaaaagggggging.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
