New- June 1 RNY surgery date Any Buddies please?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just joined the group. My daughter suggested it as she herself is a successful 5 year RNY bypass patient. From watching her I kind of know pretty much what to expect. The good and the bad. I am 57 years old and a single parent. As for myself, I didn't really start to have a weight problem until after having kids. Through the years the weight slowly piled on. On top of that I developed type 2 insulin dependent diabetes in my late 30's. My youngest was born after I became diabetic. I also have several other chronic conditions as well. The last 3 years I have been in and out of the hospital with septicemia, cellulitis, osteomyelitis, diabetic foot ulcers, two partial toe amputations on both feet and diabetic ketoacidosis. It has roughly been every 4-6 months that I've been in the hospital for at least 1 1/2 to 2 weeks followed by 4-6 weeks of IV meds via PICC line plus home nurse visits, OT and PT visits. It's only been the last 5 months that my blood sugars have really been under control and that my feet have been healed. I was finally able to go and see the bariatric surgeon and start the process to finally reach the goal of having RNY gastric bypass surgery. I received my surgery date approximately 3 weeks ago. I am now on the last day and a half of my liquid diet before surgery. the Protein powder that my daughter gave me is disgusting (she just laughed and told me to get used to it. HA) and is difficult for me to choke down. I need to try different brands to find one that is more palatable for me. My biggest problem is that I have healthy (I am a good cook, like to cook and like to eat and enjoy food) eating habits. It's just that my portions are way too big compounded by the last 3 years of not being able to walk as the wound care doctors wanted me off my foot as much as possible. So, I became more sedentary. And, voila! I gained weight and couldn't lose it. So here I am and the big day is almost here. My daughter will be taking me to the hospital and staying with me. My son-in-law will come to the hospital after the kids go to school. He's staying home with the kids while my daughter stays with me for a week. My oldest son will be coming also to the hospital. My youngest son isn't (both of my sons are autistc) sure yet. My neighbor will cook and watch over my sons for me until I come home.

Now that I've introduced myself, I'd love to hear from others. I am extremely excited and a little nervous. But it won't be long. Monday morning at 5:30am. I've also been thinking about the walking and eating. Anyone else having surgery on the 1st? Anyone willing to be buddies with me?

Hi, Welcome and this is a very safe, supportive and warm place to be. I love this site as I have learned alot, shared more than I have with my own family and friends. I like you didn't gain weight until I was much older after having my daughter at 35 years old, then diagnosed hypothyroid the weight began from there. I have tried so many diet plans, workout strategies and fat burners, grabbers and every gemic out here. Only to gain more back and then some. I also have been diagnosed with several weight related issues, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. Then the kicker was sleep Apnea and now I am married to my C-pap machine every night. I chose to take a stand and take care of myself. I looked into weight loss surgery 3-years ago before things became so bad. I knew that I was sinking but I ran for the hills after I learned about the procedures. THINKING I can do this myself. Well I gave it my BEST try but I became a human yo-yo. So here I am... My surgery is scheduled for Friday, June 5th at 11:30am. I am so happy about my decision and will do anything that I have to do to get my health back. I am so happy that you have chosen as well.

Best of luck to you on Monday and I will be watching for your posts and updates when you are able... You GO-Girl!!

You sound so much like me it's incredible. I have type 2 insulin dependent diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, complex pain sydrome, high blood pressure (since I was 22), high cholesterol (specifically triglycerides), Migraines, year-round allergies, rosacea, recurrent yeast infections, cellulitis and severe obsteuctive sleep apnea. I am "married" nightly to a c-pap machine. I do sleep much better. Although I am also plagued by insomnia on top of it.

I was told by my surgeon, Dr. James Ku that I have metabolic syndrome. I had never heard of it before, but started reading up on it. People with the co-morbidities that we have are said to have this syndrome. I did find out some of the most likely causes why we cannot lose weight no matter what diet. Basically, surgery is our only answer.

So I am excited and can't wait to get it over with already. I am so looking forward to being able to do more without feeling like I'm going to fall over. In the meantime out of breath and sweating all over the place. I'm talikng mainly my face and head where my hair becomes soaked like it was just out of the shower. I hate that. That is from the diabetes. I was told because I am a long term diabetic, that I have an 85% chance of it going away as I lose weight. I hope that I'm in that 85% because I certainly don't want to lose any more parts of me.

Have you been told of your surgery date yet lisanewme67?

This is @@rosey442's daughter! I just wanted to pop in to say that she did great in surgery - she was taken to the OR around 7:35am, and Dr. Ku was finished by 9:25am. He found a hiatial hernia, but otherwise the surgery went as planned.

@@lisaanewme67, good luck with your upcoming surgery! I hope these next few days go by quickly for you, as I remember that pre-op anxiety all too well.

@@kiss-my-kitty Thanks so much for the update on your mom@rosey442. I am happy that she is doing well and that you have the experience to help her through.

Yes, so many emotions going on days before the surgery as you recall but there is a pretty rainbow at the end of all of this I keep telling myself, lol.

So excited none the less!!! Thanks for reaching out.

I just had mine done on June 2, 2015. Doing well except for an allergic reaction to the glue they used. Never used to have so many allergies. I am hating the blended diet. Today took some Panera Broccoli cheese Soup and put it in the blender. At least it tasted like real food. My thirtieth wedding anniversary was on Mionday so that was hard. I saw the doctor today and he scheduled me for the class on introducing solid foods for 6/30. Looking forward to real food again.

Hi, Just wanted to report back in and say that the surgery went well as my daughter had reported. I was discharged on the 3rd and went and stayed with my daughter until Sunday the 7th, I came home exhausted, especially because I had to stop at the grocery store on the way home for some essential groceries for my sons (17 and 19, both of whom are autistic). By the time I got iin, I was ready to fall over as it's close to a 30 mile drive from my daughter's (I insisted on driving myself). Overall, it wasn't too bad except for the large speed bumps in the parking lot. However, I spent the next 2 days mainly in bed, exhausted and aching all over. By Wednesday I was back to cooking for my sons as they can make very little for themselves. They do however, take care of the litter box and trash for me along with the mail and carrying in any groceries or laundry.

I am getting bored with the bland liquid diet. My daughter who had undergone this surgery 5 1/2 years ago just laughed. Although I know that the time will pass, it feels like forever. I gave her back the cans of Protein powder she gave me because I just can't choke it down. I don't know how she does it. I do like Protein Bars. She did have one Protein Powder last year that I tried that I liked, but neither one of us remembers the brand. For now it's greek yogurt, cottage cheese with a little fruit mixed in (15 gm per cup) and Carnation Instant Breakfast for my Protein. Can anyone suggest a Protein Powder that actually tastes decent? Amulcahey, you saw your surgeon sooner than I. I see my surgeon this coming Tuesday the 16th. Panera Soup sounds delicious. I see the dietician on the 2nd of July. I guess we'll go over foods then as by then I'll be starting the 2nd phase or pureed diet. I can't wait until the next 3-4 weeks pass so I can be on a regular diet! Glad to hear that you, amulcahey, are doing well. Keep up the good work sister!

you have your hands full for sure. Glad it went well- as far as protein goes I like thePremier Protein Drinks in vanilla and chocolate. You can get them at Costco- they have strawberry too but I don't care for it. Just keep trying em out- good luck!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
