Will I be okay to take a final exam 1 week after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I finally got a surgery date on July 17! I'm super excited the only thing is that one week after my surgery I need to go to my school to take a final in the lab. Do you think I will be okay to drive and walk up 4 flights of stairs plus sit for an hour or so and take this test comfortably? This is my very first college coarse so this is all very new to me. I guess my other options would be delay my surgery a week (which sounds awful after waiting so long) or contact the instructor and see what she say. What do you guys think?

I had a great surgery and uneventful recovery (no real pain to speak of). What I did notice though was that I was in a brain fog for at least a week or two after surgery. I would be more concerned about that than the physical issues barring any complications.

I am a student too. Had my surgery on 5 May and started summer semester on the 11th. Honestly, you could tough through it, but it will be stressful. Sitting was the worst for me. At home we are a little reclined back, at a desk hovering over papers puts uncomfortable pressure on the incisions. Also, you will still tire easily. If possible, be as rested as possible, have someone drive you and allow plenty of time for all those stairs.

There is no way to predict that. I am 48 and went back to work on day 7. I felt miserable the first 3 days only, and then pretty great after. I never took a pain med after I left the hospital, and just tried to sleep and get fluids in. We all have different experiences and recoveries. If you have never had any other surgery I think it will be harder to deal with....

I did have a c-section when I had my daughter. I had bad neasea after that surgery but I remember going to several doctors appointments and a 3 hour newborn photo shoot that first week. I had to carry that big car seat and baby up stairs. Is sleeve anything like a c-section do you or anyone else know?

I had my surgery on spring break and though I was tired and not back 100%, I was able to make it and sit through all 5 of my classes. I also have to walk between classes which total about 3 miles. I didn't have any complications, but i think if all goes well, it's doable! Good luck! By the way, if you really feel awful they have to accommodate you, I'm sure your surgeon will give you a note. Good luck.

I would push the surgery back one week if it were me. You have no idea how your recovery will be. I had no pain, no nausea, no gas pains, no fatigue, etc...after my sleeve. I was back to the gym and getting my walking in on the treadmill 6 days after. My friend, on the other hand, had a miserable recovery. It was nearly a month before she was feeling better. I don't think there's any way to predict how your body will take the surgery.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
