6 weeks out and having trouble getting proper fluids in

Recommended Posts

Anyone else have this problem? Before surgery, I never drank 64 ounces total a day and find myself struggling even more now. I'm averaging about 30 ounces a day and feel nauseous if I try to force more. I know I'm getting slightly dehydrated at times based on a few leg cramps at night and dizzy when I get up too fast. Gatorade G2 seems to be helping with the cramps...

Any other suggestions that I'm not thinking about would be appreciated.

I know that many will tell you not to drink from a straw...but I find I can get much more Water down with it! Give it a try, take little sips and see if it helps.

I can get more fluids down if they are cold. My Water needs a little flavor, even if it is only a splash of lemon juice.

I was able to drink 64 plus oz a day before surgery but it's definitely a struggle for me post surgery.

I have to really pay attention and sip all day. For me, room temperature Water works better than cold (vary your temperature to see if it makes a difference).

Also, Water with Protein liquid concentrate or Water Enhancer seems to go down better than plane water for me.

Setting small, intermediate goals helps. I use a 24 oz water bottle that I refill throughout the day so I have to commit to finishing half of the bottle by a certain time, etc. or I know I will be behind.

Last night, I took my water bottle to bed and knew I couldn't go to sleep until I finished it.

I still have to sip slowly and not drink too fast.

Keep working on it and trying to see what works.

Best of luck and don't give up.

I'm having a similar issue. I almost never drank 64 oz. of Water in a day before surgery because it made me feel waterlogged and ill. Post-op on my liquid diet, I could easily get in 64oz. of Water a day with no ill effects. Now that I've started on soft foods, I just can't seem to get that much water in. Between having to wait 15 minutes before meals and an hour after meals before I can drink again, I've only been getting in 32oz. of water a day. I think today is the first day that I've gotten anywhere close to 64oz. of water in, and I've admittedly been doing a bit of chugging to accomplish it, which I know isn't good.

I do like BBtravel's suggestion of setting an alarm and trying to get in 6 ounces at a time. I might have to try that.

I have the same problem. I'm six weeks out today and I am doing fine with Protein but the fluids are hard for me. I've always been a Water drinker and never really had this problem before. However, I've realized that I used to chug about two cups of water at a time and drink a lot when I ate. Sense I can't do that now, I'm struggling. And like others mentioned, the no water 30 mins before or after eating, and eating 5-6 times a day poses a real problem too. I do find cold works better and makes me less nauseous. I'm hoping that as time goes on I'll be able to drink more at a time. I'll keep trying to figure something else out in the meantime. It's nice to know others feel the same. Good luck!

I'm 3 weeks out and have a big problem with fluids. I've always drank tons of Water, and now I dream of water! I try sipping but it takes me a whole day to get through 1 bottle! I definitely feel dehydrated- maybe I'll try G2.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
