Gastric Sleeve and E. Coli :)

Ok, here is an interesting subject for you and my personal story. I am post op about 2 months on 5/4/15. I've lost about 65 pounds so far all together and am about 10 pounds above my Doctor's goal. My goal is 25 pounds less than what the doc wants (Doc said 235, I want to hit 210).

I work in Mexico (but live in Cali) and well I finally, after 14 years of doing this caught E. Coli. I had 105 degree temperature for 2 days plus I had a hurricane strength rains coming out of my butt for days, bad stomach cramping and pain... not to mention internal bleeding from the intestines.

In 3 days I lost about 12 pounds. I was getting seriously dehydrated. After seeing my PCP, we decided that my overall health was more important than my diet and I had to break diet for a few days. When I say break diet, I mean that I had carbs. Mostly crackers, bread, and tons and tons of gatorade. I also had noodles and rice in my Soups which I tolerated all very well and the carbs seem to have helped me during the illness. I had a severe case. I was one step from being hospitalized.

I've gained 6 pounds back of the 12 pounds that I lost. Mostly Water weight I guess. I am finally fully recovered as of today and am starting back on my diet again tomorrow. I'm still less than I was before I got ill.

Would you have done the same thing? Break diet temporarily to take care of a could be life threatening illness? Is it bad?

With how much weight I loss and how dehydrated I was, I am assuming that gaining 6 pounds of the weight loss back would be expected, right? Again, I am still about 6 pounds lighter than I was pre-sickness.

What would you have done differently? I'm interested to see what people have to say or think on this.

I wasn't able to take my Calcium Vitamins for a week. Apparently it doesn't mix well with E Coli and the antibiotics I had.

Yes, I would absolutely do what my Dr. advised. It wouldn't matter if you lost weight if you wound up dead.

I didn't have the sleeve to diet. I had the sleeve for my life and health.

I hope you are healed and feeling much better soon.

Diet was a poor choice of wording on my end. When I said diet, I mean like what I now normally eat, not as in dieting.

Glad you are better but your health is more important. Besides, your diet should be "low carb" not "no carb". Just get back on track & you will be fine. It's good that you followed your doctors advice to get healthy even though it meant eating more.

Just happened with me! Four weeks ago I was in emergency surgery for an aneurysm. I am at home recovery

ing. Once I got home friends/family brought me food for myself and my daughter. They dropped off muffins, Cookies, Pasta dishes..... I have had some of these items but still haven't touched the Pasta dishes - I will make them for my daughter. I don't feel like eating much because I am not doing much activity. But I have tried not to think too much about carbs etc while I am healing.

Interesting I have still 40 pounds to lose (lost 75) and I have been stalled for 11 months. I got on the scale and since eating not so rigid I have lost 7 pounds in the last 4 weeks!!!

Heal your body first - be good to yourself.

You did the right thing. Heal your body first and then get back on the routine. Hope you are fully recovered soon and I wish you much success in obtaining your goal. You and I are at about the same weight and I am encouraged that you lost so much. I am only three weeks out from surgery however.

I would have done the same thing you did. And just think you still lost weight. I think it is more important to be health then to stick to the plan if you are needing carbs to get you where you needed to be.

I would have done anything I could to feel better if I was that sick. If you didn't eat what you did you might have gotten worse and then a slippery slope to get back to healthy. Sorry that you got the bug.

Can you explain the type of abdominal pain you are experiencing with E. Coli? Please!

I was sleeved a week ago in Mexico. I came home to my son being diagnosed with E. Coli, and I have been having severe abdominal pain for the past 4 days. I don't know if it's from my sleeve or if I have been infected with E. Coli. The pain is severe. Thanks

I apologize, I was on a business trip (in Mexico again) and didn't see this. I had a severe case, I started with a fever and then it went into the stomach problems. It really wasn't too much in the stomach as it was in my lower abdomen where I felt a lot of discomfort and pain. I had to go to the bathroom constantly, but it wasn't like normal diarrhea, it was very different. Hard to explain.

So, I am completely better now. I did gain back most of the weight, but the day after I peaked, it started coming back off again and now I am about 1.5 pounds above the low point, but this time losing it in a healthy and more timely manner.

I'm happy with the results and glad I did what I did.

I have found out that I can eat carbs. As others said, it is a low carb, not a no carb lifestyle. Yesterday I had a small personal pizza (like 4 inch diameter, not too big) for supper. I was still under the 150 carb limit a day my doc told me... I still lost .75 of a pound even with the pizza.< /p>

My experience is that I have always eaten somewhat healthy. I don't eat that bad.... my problem was the quantity. Prior to surgery I would have eaten two or three of those pizzas.

My biggest struggle right now is remember not to drink when I eat. That is very hard for me to do. I try my best though. I'm 90% successful, but there are points that I forget.

If I am at a restaurant I just put my Water on the far side of the table so I don't mindlessly drink during the meal. At home I put it away in the fridge. This way it isn't at the table and I have to go out of my way to get it out of the fridge. I am then more likely to check the time to make sure it has been a half hour since I ate.

I would have done the same as you and eaten the carbs. I probably would have had G2 instead of gatorade. I also have low carb Pasta at home. I likely would have used that for the noodles. Dreamfields is a pretty good Pasta. I like it better than Barilla. I still make it for my husband. He likes it.

Getting back to healthy is more important than losing weight.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
